Written by EduSpiral Consultant Services. For more information contact 01111408838

There are so many options out there to choose after your SPM, O-Levels or UEC and it can get quite confusing.  A diploma is for students who are sure of what they want to study while students who are still unsure can take the Pre-University course first and then decide later what course to study. The diploma course is more practical with some theory while a degree programme is more academic. The assessment for the diploma course at top private universities in Malaysia will be a mixture of Coursework, Assignments, Quizzes, Exams and Projects.

To join a diploma course, you will need at least 3 credits in SPM, O-Levels or UEC. You must have a pass in BM & Sejarah. Entry requirements for the diploma will vary from course to course so do check with the university on the exact requirements or you may contact EduSpiral Consultant Services. If you are joining finance, IT or accounting, you will need to include Maths. For Diploma in Engineering courses you will need to include a credit in Maths and one Science subject. A student may apply for the PTPTN loan for the diploma course to study in Malaysia.

Why Study the Diploma at Top Private Universities & Colleges in Malaysia?

I had financial difficulties for my studies and contacted EduSpiral for advise. He took me and my mum to tour the college which fit my budget. It had excellent facilities & a job guarantee! Calvin Teoh, Diploma in Culinary Arts at YTL International College of Hotel Management

An advantage of the diploma is that after 2 years of studying, should you not want to continue on to the degree, you can stop and find a job. Your salary would be about RM1600-1800. But if you want to continue on to a degree programme, you can. You will need to provide all the transcripts, course outline and letter of completion to the university that you would like to continue your degree course.

They will then evaluate the subjects for exemptions. After the evaluation, they will let you know how many subjects left you need to take. Generally, you will enter into Year 2 of the related degree programme. For example, a diploma in business administration will enter into Year 2 of the degree programme or diploma in mass comm into Year 2 of the Mass Comm degree.

After SPM or O-Levels, it is normal to be confused about what you want to study. So, it is important to talk to counselors who are informed and experienced. You should also visit a few colleges or universities to see their facilities, student environment, lecturers and student support services for comparison.

Some of the colleges charge RM30,000 for a business diploma but with terrible facilities or even is located in a shoplot! I know of 2 institutions with medium sized campuses where you can complete the 2-year diploma at a cost of only RM23,000. This is great savings for the facilities that you get. It is value for money as when you graduate with a business diploma, your starting salary is about RM1500-1800, so for a RM23,000 diploma is pretty good investment. I know of an automotive college charging RM50,000 for their 2.5 year diploma and the starting salary for a mechanic is about RM1000-1800. Do you think that it is worth the investment?

Taking a Pre-University programme, you must continue on to the degree as a Pre-University is not recognised for work purposes. Some courses such as culinary and design, a diploma is sufficient to join the workforce in Malaysia. Otherwise, it is advisable to continue your studies to degree level.

Starting salaries for diploma holders range from RM1500 to RM2000 while degree holders range from RM2500 to RM3500.

You can apply for the PTPN Loan . You cannot apply for the PTPN Loan for Foundation, Pre-University or A-Level programmes. The amount of the loan varies depending on your family income.

A diploma course is more practical while a Foundation, external Pre-University programme and degree courses are more academic.

The assessments for a diploma programme at private universities and colleges in Malaysia is a mix of Assignments, Coursework, and written examination percentage. The diploma programme provides students with relevant, interesting, stimulating and practical experience via a variety of teaching and practical techniques.

The learning is very much practical oriented.

You need at least 5 credits to enter a Pre-University or Foundation programme while diploma programmes require only 3 credits. The requirements vary from course to course so you should check with the university or an experienced education counselor for advise. Most diplomas can be transferred to another college or university into the Year 2 of the relevant programme. If you have taken the Diploma in Accounting, it is highly likely that you can enter into Year 2 of the degree in Accounting or Accounting & Finance. For the Diploma in Business Administration, you can enter into Year 2 of the degree in Business Administration depending on the exemptions.

However, if you go from the Diploma in Business Administration into the Degree in Accounting, then you may not get the optimum amount of exemptions because the subjects in your diploma are not similar with the degree course of the university that you want to transfer to.

To transfer your credits into another university, you will need to submit the following documents for exemptions:

  1. Transcripts from your current college or university
  2. Course outline for all the subjects taken
  3. Letter of completion or Diploma Certificate
  4. Copy of SPM Certificate

Choosing a course to study after SPM is not a science, it is a process

Students in Malaysia need to talk to the right education counselors so that you get the right information to help you in making this life-changing decision.

Ask the right Education Counselors in Malaysia to help you. Would you ask a Doctor on how to repair your car? Or would you ask a mechanic for medical advise? Although this sounds ridiculous, but many students do listen to advise from young and inexperienced counselors from universities, colleges or agents’ offices.  Talking to an experienced education advisor in Malaysia would help you to navigate through this confusing time of choosing the best course that fits you.

Experienced education counselors are able to analyse your interests, personality and exam results

to help you make a list of possible courses for consideration. EduSpiral Consultant Services staff have more than 15 years experience in counseling students. Having worked in the private education industry, we have in-depth knowledge of each private university and college in what they are good at.

EduSpiral Consultant Services has worked with our partner universities and colleges for many years while the counselors at the private universities or agents’ offices change every few years therefore they would not have the in-depth knowledge of the courses and the university that they are working at.

At EduSpiral Consultant Services, I have worked in the private higher education industry in Malaysia for more than 15 years advising students with facts and evidence on how to choose the right course after SPM. You should carefully think about what are the options available to you. To choose the best course that fits you, students may fill up our EduSpiral Career Assessment form for evaluation.

Jia Ping, Mass Communication at KDU University College

The best private universities and colleges in Malaysia have excellent facilities, years of experience running the programme, strong student support services, internships and experienced lecturers.

They are also accredited by MQA and approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Education. Accreditation by the various professional bodies such as the Board of Engineers Malaysia, Pharmacy Board, Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia, Nursing Board, Malaysian Medical Council, etc also indicates the standard achieved.

The best private university in Malaysia will focus on quality, have award winners for the particular courses, years of experience offering the particular course, highly experienced lecturers, a good study environment (not a party university), internships, good mix of international & local students, extra-curricular activities and good facilities. The SETARA ranking is a guide for students to assess the quality of a private university in Malaysia.

When choosing a university and college in Malaysia, it is important for students to visit the campus and see the facilities and feel the culture of the students to see if it fits you.

Talk to the lecturers and find out from the counselors there about the courses and check if the courses have been accredited by MQA and other external bodies like the Pharmacy Board, Nursing Board, Malaysian Medical Council, Board of Engineers Malaysia , Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia or Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia.

The environment should be one where students speak mostly in English so that you can improve

your English and communication skills. If you are weak in English and choose a cheap university where the students speak mainly in Mandarin, it will be difficult for you to improve your English.

Star newspaper has reported that graduates with good English earn 25% higher salary and get faster promotion. The Ministry of Education reported that there were more than 70,000 public university jobless graduates and one of the main reasons was poor command of the English language.

Would you rather suffer for 4 years and get a high salary for 60 years of your work life or an easy 4 years and low salary for 60 years? The decisions that you make now, can change your life forever. Remember the best university doesn’t mean it is the best university for you. The best university is one that fits your career goals, your personality and can push you to a higher level of success.

Below are a list of the best private colleges and universities in Malaysia in their various fields, in my opinion.

The architecture profession in Malaysia is protected by law. The regulating and governing body of the architecture profession in Malaysia is known as Lembaga Akitek Negara (LAM). They govern the entire profession starting from the definition of an architect under the Malaysian Constitution, licensing, practice, acts and enactments as well as education.

The other body that concerns the well being of architects themselves is Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia.

It functions as an association that takes care of its members, organize functions and manages the professional development of an architect from the lowest to highest qualification. Just like Bar exams for lawyers, architects also require certain level of qualification that is a standard worldwide.

The qualifications are known as LAM Part 1, 2 and 3. The equivalent of this is RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), AIA (American Institute of Architects) and RAIA (Royal Australian Institute of Architects).

Students after SPM or O-Levels will go for the Foundation program for one year first. After that, they will

go on to an Architecture degree that’s accredited by Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) Part 1. Upon completion of the degree, graduates will then go on to a Masters in Architecture that’s accredited Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) Part 2.

After graduating with Part 2, a person is known as an architect, and will be able to practice according to the job specification of an architect. This should be the minimum target of anyone pursuing this profession. Anything less is a waste of time.

These qualifications can be obtained in two ways:

  • Obtaining a fully accredited degree (or equivalent) that carries Part 1 or 2 equivalent.
  • Sitting for individual exams after obtaining a non-accredited degree for Part or 2.

Part 3 can only be obtained after practicing as an architect for a minimum of 2 years and fulfilling all the project requirements set by LAM.

Fulfilling these needs, the architect will then submit themselves to a series of interviews and exams to determine that they are capable and absolutely qualified. These exams are conducted by Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM).

If you are interested in creating things, buildings and spaces, technology, art and design, a career in architecture may be for you. Basically, an architect is a person who creates the designs of buildings. They don’t actually build them, that’s the job of the Civil Engineer. The architecture profession in Malaysia is protected by law and is regulated by the Lembaga Akitek Negara (LAM). They govern the entire profession starting from the definition of an architect under the Malaysian Constitution, licensing, practice, acts and enactments as well as education.

Another important body concerning architects is the Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) who takes care of the well being of the architects including professional development from the lowest to the highest qualifications. They also organise functions and activities for their members.

Designing Functional Legacies at Taylor’s University

At SABD,Taylor’s University goal is to elevate our research centre, The Center for Modern Architecture Studies in Southeast Asia (MASSA), into a renowned research centre in Southeast Asia.

We intend to address the urgent need to include modern architecture as part of the architectural heritage in Southeast Asia, thus aiding the process of planning settlements and designing buildings that are suited to the context and continuity of the cultures of Southeast Asia.

As part of our initiatives to document our heritage, the students visited Kampung Cina, Kuala Terengganu, to examine the site and produce detailed drawings. These drawings were subsequently used to restore a temple to its former glory, after it was partly ruined in a fire.

Other research projects undertaken by our students include:

  • Modern Architecture Kuala Lumpur Series featuring Masjid Negara, Muzium Negara, Stadium Negara, Stadium Chin Woo and British Council
  • The Inventory of Sungai Buloh Leprosy Settlements, Selangor
  • Chapel of St. Francis Institution, Malacca
  • No. 6, Hereen Street, Bandar Hilir, Malacca
  • Ho Ann Kiong Temple, Kampung Cina, Kuala Terengganu and many more

Architecture is the art of designing the human built environment. Buildings are one of the most visible productions of man, and

vary greatly in design, function, and construction implementation across the globe. The vision that Architects conceive is projected onto the society and the built environment in which they practice.

These conceptions and ideas will inadvertently have profound effects on the built environment, and consequently on the people who interact with that environment.

Architecture is, therefore, an art form, the learning of which requires professional practice, personal artistic development and technical knowledge of building.

The constant dialogue between society and the architect is what produces architecture – as a product and as well as a discipline.

The architecture profession in Malaysia is protected by law. The regulating and governing body of the architecture profession in

Malaysia is known as Lembaga Akitek Negara (LAM).

The diagram above shows the career path of an architect. After graduating with Part 2, a person is known as an architect, and

UCSI University architecture students are taught by qualified experienced industry professionals

will be able to practice according to the job specification of an architect.
