Digital talent is already in high demand at present and looks to grow even more in years to come. In the World Economic Forum (WEF) Future of Jobs Report 2023 found that employers expect to create 69 million new jobs by 2027 and eliminate 83 million positions. As Malaysia and the world experience the extended impact from the Covid-19 pandemic, the role of digital is ever more important for the survival of businesses. It is therefore not entirely surprising that digital job vacancies in Malaysia almost tripled from June 2020 to April 2021.

This finding was made based on Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation’s (MDEC) tracking of digital vacancies on five popular recruitment platforms in Malaysia since June 2020.

MDEC found that the number of digital job vacancies increased from around 19,000 in June last year to more than 56,000 as at April 2021, with the largest share of vacancies posted on LinkedIn. The most popular jobs were in software development, data science, IT services and e-commerce. Some 76% of the vacancies were for experienced hires while only about 20% were open to fresh graduates, with the rest for internships.

11 per cent to 54 per cent of jobs in Malaysia can be significantly affected by AI in the next two decades and 7.4 per cent of Malaysian workers are at risk of being displaced by 2028.

For example, you have your code or data ready but just need an environment where you can place or use this data. Then Cloud Services will provide you with a platform in this case where you can run the applications you have or build newer ones in the environment provided to you.

The vendor controls runtime concerns, middleware, operating systems, virtualization, servers, storage and even networking. A good example for this Amazon Web Services catered service called as Amazon Elastic Beanstalk. Amazon Elastic beanstalk provides your applications or data a perfect environment or platform to run. It lets you deploy and scale your web applications or services.

It supports Java, .net, PHP, NodeJS, Ruby, Docker and even Go. It also supports quite few servers in the market. All you have to do load your data. Elastic beanstalk will be managing, spawning instances, auto scaling, deployment, loading balancing and even resource monitoring.

So you actually a get platform in real terms.

SaaS (Software as a Service)

As the name suggests in this offering a complete software is given to the users to actually go ahead and use in the form of a Service. Here the only thing you manage as the user is your data. Your vendor manages the application, middleware, operating systems, runtime, servers, storage, virtual machines and networking.

The vendor in simple words gives a software to use. A common example would GMAIL. Yes, here as a user what you will do is login with your credentials. And use this email software in the form of a web application. You do not have to worry about any servers, outages, disasters and in this case you don’t even have to download anything.

Again regardless of their location, no matter these resources are located, they will always a separate private network for them to function.

Cloud Developer

Once the Solutions architect designs a blueprint we know what needs to be built. A cloud developer one is expected to bring these blueprints to life. So Cloud Developers are ones who design and develop Cloud applications. As a Cloud Developer you would be expected to know the best practices one needs to build architectures.

Cloud Developers are also expected to involved in practices that concern, developing, deploying, and even debugging cloud applications. Here are some skills a cloud developer is expected to know or get involved in:

Here are some of those skills or responsibilities you should have as a cloud administrator or operations engineer,

  • You should relevant experience as a system administrator and should knowledge about system operations
  • Virtualization is very important from a cloud perspective and it important you know virtual machines or virtualization
    It is important to know auditing and monitoring of resources
  • You should have knowledge about networking concepts
  • As an administrator it is important to have knowledge of DevOps practices as well
  • It is important to know and understand data flow from a particular service to another
  • Ability to understand how networks work and how to keep data safe and secure over this network
  • Understand of monitoring and management services on cloud platforms

To get the certifications just mentioned, people who are starting fresh with Cloud Computing, should start with AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification. This is the certification that prepares you to the fundamentals of Cloud Computing and Amazon Web Services.

Once you have this you should think of stepping up and choose a path or a role mentioned above. The roles or certifications mentioned above are similar in nature when compared with three cloud career roles we discussed in previous bit.

One thing you need to know is once you have the foundational certification, the next step is to opt for an associate level certification. The expects you to have one year of experience in Implementing cloud solution AWS cloud platform or relevant experience that tells you are practically adept for this role. So can opt for associate level certifications for AWS Architect, AWS Developer or AWS SysOps Administrator roles.

Once you have these certificates you can try for jobs in this domain. These certifications are valid for two years post that you may require to retake the exam if AWS decides to discard these certifications or change them majorly.

If you have worked in the domain and have experience over two years. You will be eligible to professional level certifications. These advanced certifications and you tested on your technical and advanced level skills in your domain or role. As an AWS Solutions Architect you can opt for Professional certificate for AWS Solutions Architect. If you are a AWS Certified Developer or AWS Certified SysOps Admin you can opt for a professional certification that is AWS Certified DevOps Engineer Professional.

Malaysia’s premier education institution, Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) announced the establishment of an Internet of Things (IoT) Center of Excellence to develop, facilitate and promote IoT education by leveraging IBM Watson IoT platform.

This first of its kind IoT Center of Excellence in Malaysia will further extend the power of cognitive computing to the billions of connected devices, sensors and systems that comprise the IoT.

APU will develop, facilitate and promote IoT education though its state-of-the-art cloud-based IoT infrastructure used by students, researchers and faculty members. APU faculty and students will be able to develop IoT apps, products and services using the IBM Watson IoT Platform, which securely connects devices to applications using cloud-based services and rich analytics. This includes:

Assistance in IBM Watson IoT courses being taught at APU by providing the educators’ guide, labs, tutorials and other supporting resources to assist with the IoT curriculum;
IBM-led Watson IoT hands-on workshops to students and faculty as needed to build in-demand IoT skills; and
Extended Bluemix trial to help students and faculty become proficient with IBM Watson IoT.
IBM will also provide relevant IoT resources, training the trainers and assistance in building a workforce with high-demand IoT skills. This will also equip APU with current expertise and knowledge in line with the latest IT industry requirements, as well as prepare students to meet future industry requirements.

The convergence has helped tear down the silo walls between operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT), allowing unstructured machine-generated data to be analyzed for insights that will drive improvements.

Today computers — and, therefore, the internet — are almost wholly dependent on human beings for information. Nearly all of the roughly 50 petabytes (a petabyte is 1,024 terabytes) of data available on the internet were first captured and created by human beings by typing, pressing a record button, taking a digital picture or scanning a bar code.

The problem is, people have limited time, attention and accuracy — all of which means they are not very good at capturing data about things in the real world. If we had computers that knew everything there was to know about things — using data they gathered without any help from us — we would be able to track and count everything and greatly reduce waste, loss and cost. We would know when things needed replacing, repairing or recalling and whether they were fresh or past their best.

IoT is more than just having Internet connectivity on everyday appliances. Essentially, IoT is a convergence of smart devices that generates data through sensors to create new information and knowledge to boost human intelligence, productivity and quality of life.

IoT is defined as “Intelligent interactivity between human and things to exchange information and knowledge for new value creation”. It is a complex yet complete solution compassing three main technology components, namely connected things with embedded sensors, connectivity and infrastructure, and last but not least, analytics and applications.

For example, factories can place sensors on its machines and equipment to discover early signs of fatigue on the machines or related parts. This way, preventive maintenance can be done on machines just before they break down and cause production downtime.

In the world of rapid digital interaction, IoT gives insights on how consumers integrate technology in their daily lives, a valuable information that can be used in various ways. The growing need for internet-related products and services is driving this transition, not only globally but also here in Malaysia.

According to youth in Malaysia, the most exciting technologies expected to have the largest impact on their future lives will be Internet of Things (IoT) based on survey findings released by Microsoft.

Imagine the shirt, pants or dress one wears daily is linked to a digital network that monitors every bodily change and physiological activity, and sends alerts for example when there is an abnormal heart beat rate. This will indicate one’s stress or fatigue level and will help one make a well-informed decision whether to continue with the activities or consult a physician.

Similarly sensors would ‘read’ the colours of the secretions in the baby’s diapers and send the data through the network to see if there is any indication on the baby’s health status.

The data from the diapers could also be sent to a connected smart electronic device such as a phone or smart watch to the mothers or the caretakers to alert them on any problem or that it is time for them to replace the soaking wet nappy with a new clean dry one.

With IoT even the doctor can now track the patients’ health status real-time from the comfort of his office chair. Those data sent to connected monitoring devices may be able to track the daily activities, vital signs and diet habits that can give the physician an idea of what is going on and provide the required advice.

Very soon, we would be looking at IoT that would turn the home into a really smart and cost-saving home. Experts around the world are working hard and fast to bring regular household appliances to life by turning them into smart appliances connected to the network.

Imagine your smart home is ready to receive you by the time you arrive home after a hectic day. The air-conditioner is already switched on to cool you down from the heat outside. Selected lights are switched on prior to your arrival or switched off as soon as you leave for work. Everything in your smart home is pre-set to welcome you or your guest.

All switches are multi-connected via smart devices that can be used as the remote control.  At the recent MCMC-Intel GS1 Malaysia IoT Seminar held recently at Cyberjaya, the national power company Tenaga Nasional Berhad Malaysia (TNB) showcased one of its new IoT application to save electricity cost.

With the target to create smart users, TNB has come up with a device called Smart Meter connected to a network where the user could manage and monitor usage in the most seamless way possible via an app connected to the Smart Meter. Users will be able to monitor usage, payment history and plan their finances and most of all be aware on the electrical appliance usage and electricity consumption via the app.

The Smart Meter will be installed at every Malaysian home in the future. The installation has already started and only in a matter of time all users will be able to monitor and control electricity usage via their smart mobile devices.

These are the few examples how IoT could well change our lifestyle. IoT in fact brings endless possibilities in enriching our lifestyle.

In 2015, the Ministry of Science, Innovation & Technology Malaysia launched the National IoT Strategic Roadmap, which forecasted opportunities to reach RM9.5 billion in 2020 and RM42.5 billion in 2025. This is all done to create a national ecosystem to make IoT a new source of economic growth with its industrialisation and proliferation of use.

The National IoT Strategic Roadmap outlines 3 national goals:

  1. Malaysia as the Regional Development Hub for IoT
  2. Create a conducive IoT industry ecosystem
  3. Strengthen technopreneur capabilities in Apps & Services layer

Gartner predicts that by 2017, 50 percent of IoT solutions (typically a product combined with a service) will originate in startups that are less than three years old. Malaysia also have their own IoT Ecosystem.

Over the recent years, technology companies have developed more devices with capabilities to be connected to the Internet — including watches, televisions, cameras and others. A separate report by IHS Markit also suggested that there will be more than 20 billion connected devices in 2020. Startups such as Katsana, REKA and Jom Parking in providing creative IoT solutions for Transportation segment. Favoriot, Teleme, GetDoc, and Doctor2U are startups that will focus on Health and Insurance too. There’s going to be many more Malaysian IoT startups that are eager to offer their solutions for Malaysia market or globally.

In Malaysia, the IoT industry is expected to generate over 14,000 new jobs and contribute billions of ringgit to the economy. According to MIMOS, IoT will create a positive impact on several areas. First, it expects mobile device penetration to hit 280% by 2025 (from 144% currently). It also expects mobile broadband penetration to jump to 167% by 2025 (from under 15% in 2015) and mobile services to more than double to US$16 billion in 2025.

MIMOS also added that implementation of IoT is also likely to contribute RM9.5 billion to Malaysia’s gross national income by 2020, and RM42.5 billion by 2025. From the RM42.5 billion projection, RM34 billion will be driven by apps and services, as well as analytics solutions.

Separately, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation added that IoT is likely to create over 14,270 high-skilled employment opportunities by 2020.

By building the local IoT ecosystem, it allows local startups and tech companies to tap onto the vast potential globally — which is estimated to be valued from US$1.9 trillion to US$7.1 trillion by 2020.

“IoT will be the key driver in transforming Malaysia into a high-income economy. Cybersecurity is very much a global issue. When attacks happen in the US, chances are, they will trickle down to other parts of the world too.

According to Forbes, the global cybersecurity market reached $75 billion for 2015 and is expected to hit $170 billion in 2020.

In Malaysia, specifically, cybercrimes have increased at an average of 10,000 cases per year – the highest number involves online scams and hacking information systems of organisations.

CyberSecurity Malaysia receives between 9,000 and 10,000 incident reports each year on various matters of contention happening in cyberspace.

The cyber security specialist agency under the Communications and Multimedia Ministry has recorded 7,667 cases of cyber-related incidents for the first nine months of 2019, compared to 6,182 cases recorded during the same period in 2018.

The figures from the agency showed that for January through September 2019, a total of 1,025 cases of intrusions have been recorded, intrusion attempts (69) and malicious codes (515), creating fear of the security of the country’s information technology infrastructure.

For the whole of 2018, 1,805 intrusion attempts were recorded, intrusions (1,160) and malicious codes (1,700).

More malicious codes are used to cause security breaches or intended to damage systems.

TMR reported that there are 178 cases of data breach to date, almost a 200% jump than the 63 attacks recorded last year, according to Malaysia Computer Emergency Response Team of CyberSecurity Malaysia’s figures.

In 2017, only 19 cases were reported in Malaysia but the advancements in hacking techniques and the almost muted responses to calls to enhance complex network systems had made many organisations vulnerable targets.

A survey by Chubb of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) revealed that 84% of SMEs in Malaysia were affected by cyber incidents in the past year.

Asean’s cybersecurity spending is forecasted to grow 15% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) between 2015 and 2025. In addition, Malaysia is one of the top three Asean countries that are expected to contribute 75% of the cybersecurity services market share by 2025

Security Analyst (e-security) was the position with the highest average monthly salary at RM3,400, followed by Network Security Engineer (RM3,000), Security Operator (2,750), Security Engineer (RM2,650), and Security Analyst at RM2,500.
  • In the Senior Executive Category, Two positions, Security System Engineer and IT Security Incident Response Analyst, commanded an average monthly salary of RM15,000 to RM15,500 respectively, which is more than double the overall average monthly salary of ICT professionals in this category at RM7,057. The average monthly salary of the three remaining top jobs in this category ranged from RM10,500 to RM12,500.
  • Senior Manager Level Category – The top paying position in this category was an IT Operations Security Senior Manager with an average monthly salary of RM20,500, also higher than the overall average monthly salary of RM19,147. The other top paying cybersecurity jobs in this category were Information Security Architect (RM17,500), Cybersecurity Senior Manager (RM17,000), Business Information Security Officer (RM15,225) and Senior Manager for IT Security and Infrastructure (RM13,000).
  • As it can be seen above, Cybersecurity ICT professionals can command higher than the average monthly salary of their respective job categories. Why are the salaries so high? One explanation is that there is a critical shortage of specialised cybersecurity professionals worldwide who are able to protect organisations from sophisticated online attacks. In Malaysia, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has teamed up with global technology and information security association ISACA to address the shortage of cyber security professionals in our country. There are currently 6,300 cyber security professionals in Malaysia and a target has been set to provide 10,000 professionals by 2020.
  • Cybersecurity concerns, and corresponding countermeasures, will also likely be a major investment theme as major cyber-attacks continually made making headlines. Candidates who are skilled in OpenSource, DevOps or cyber security are limited in number but essential to digital development plans, so they will be highly sought after.

When it comes to fintech and banktech, Randstad’s report points out that an area with exceptionally high talent demand is cybersecurity. Citing Frost & Sullivan reports, the potential economic loss from cyberthreats can be estimated at a hefty US$12.2 billion (RM50.4 billion), which is more than 4% of the total GDP (US$296 billion).

“Professionals who have prior experience in cybersecurity, either from agencies or with portfolios in banks and FIs, will be highly in demand in 2020,” the report continues.

It adds that fintech firms and banktech teams are focused on building their capabilities in machine learning and artificial intelligence (ML/AI), as well as robotics process automation (RPA). According to a Forrester report, the global RPA market will increase to US$2.9 billion (RM11.9 billion) by 2021, from US$250 million in 2016 (a 1,160% jump).

Asia Pacific University (APU)’s Cyber Security teams, Shellhound and Et3rnal brought the nation immense pride and joy as they emerged as the Champion and the 1st Runner up of the recently concluded Regional Cyber Challenge 2019 that was held in conjunction with the Australian Information Security Association (AISA) Perth Conference.

Asia Pacific University (APU) Cybersecurity Students Win Big

Organised by Silensec and Cyber8Labs, Australia, the competition was a virtual competition that took place around the globe. Our teams prepared and went through the competition’s challenges at our Cyber Range, while they competed among 12 participating teams that came from 9 countries.

Throughout the 5 hours of the competition, teams had to make use of their Incident Response skills to detect, respond and recover from cyber-attacks. It was an intense competition, as the teams’ capability were tested greatly through the challenging case scenarios, combined with the emergence of several vulnerabilities throughout the duration of the challenge. At the end of the challenge, both APU teams defeated their competitors and emerged as the TOP 2 TEAMS of the challenge!

At a recent prize giving ceremony held at our campus, both teams received their awards and certificates from Ms. Daisy Sinclair, Founder of Cyber8Lab Pty. Ltd., Australia, who flew here all the way from Australia to attend the ceremony.

CONGRATULATIONS to teams Shellhound & Et3rnal – thank you so much for making us proud! This achievement has once again proven that our students are capable to compete globally, as cybersecurity professionals of the future. The skills and knowledge possessed by them do not fall short of those who come from developed countries, and as graduates from a Malaysian university, they are definitely capable of standing in the eyes of the world!
