To ensure the development of the engineering industry, the company is working closely with the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA), the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) as well as the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU).

What is Mechanical Engineering?

After starting class at college, I was still confused if the course suited me. I took a bus from Seremban to meet up with EduSpiral for counseling. I have a clearer picture of what to do now.
Kuang Joe, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is an extremely diverse field covering the design, development, construction, operation and maintenance of all types of motor vehicles, aircraft and ships as well as propulsion and power plants and mechanical and robotic components used in many industries. Mechanical Engineering is one of the most popular engineering fields, also overlapping with other areas, such as Aerospace, Manufacturing and Electrical Engineering among others.

Mechanical Engineering is a discipline of engineering that applies the principles of physics and materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the production and usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of machines and tools.

The mechanical engineering field requires understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, and structural analysis. Mechanical engineers use these core principles along with tools like computer-aided engineering and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, motorized vehicles, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices and more.

Mechanical Engineers design, build, test and maintain all manner of machines in all manner of places. It’s probably the most diverse and most flexible of all engineering disciplines, covering virtually all areas of development and production like analysis, design, development, manufacturing, operation and maintenance.

Mechanical Engineering is all about turning energy into power and motion through the design of clever mechanical systems. Because it’s such a broad field, you could expect to find Mechanical Engineers almost anywhere that uses machinery. Mechanical Engineering very specifically uses mechanical power to operate machines and tools. Mechanical Engineers then use these machines and tools to develop things – anything really, from water bottles to cars to computers.

Apply all this to developing motor vehicles, building aircraft and ships, designing methods of propulsion and power plants or applying the mechanical and robotic components used in industries everywhere. And there you have career options in Malaysia and globally that stretch as far as you can imagine.

Mechanical Engineering continues to evolve as technology improves and things become smaller – the optimisation, design and construction of machines to make things never stops. Mechanical Engineers research, design, build, test, maintain and improve all manner of things, from power plants, renewable energy systems and electrical generators, to robots computer systems and aircraft engines and cars. If it is a machine, it was an engineer that made it.

In recent times, Mechanical Engineers have had to adapt to the changing needs of the technology era. Now they design bionic limbs and prosthetic joints, develop high performance composite materials, work on more flexible manufacturing processes and much more. As technology demands it, a Mechanical Engineer responds accordingly with an ingenious invention or more efficient process.

Any Mechanical Engineer you meet will be a master of energy, motion, forces, solids, liquids and gases. Depending on your area of interest, you can apply these skills to any number of sub-disciplines of Mechanical Engineering.

Mechanical Engineers work in more fields than you can imagine. If it’s a machine, you can be sure that a mechanical engineer has had something to do with designing it, constructing a prototype, testing it, perfecting it and rolling it out on the production line. Some mechanical engineers may even be involved in marketing or selling it! How about power generation, or noise and vibration, flow analysis and measurement, land transport vehicles, computational engineering, design & simulation or even composite structures.

Study Mechanical Engineering that’s Accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) at the Best Private Universities in Malaysia

One of the advantages of selecting mechanical engineering as your specialty is that it is a fairly general and all-purpose engineering degree. That means you will be able to gain employment at many different companies across all continents.

There is a high demand for qualified engineers in Malaysia therefore jobs are easy to come by and salaries are high. Top Private universities in Malaysia offer an affordable option for students who cannot get into public universities or go overseas to study.

The quality of the programmes of some universities are of high standards and accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) which provides recognition for graduates who want to work overseas.

Traits that make a good mechanical engineer If you are an innovator and you enjoy solving complex problems, then you will make a good mechanical engineer. A mechanical engineer needs to be good at applying mathematics and scientific principles to turn ideas into reality. Teamwork and leadership is also needed because mechanical engineers usually work in teams.

Advantages of Choosing a Private University with an Engineering Degree that’s Accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM)

Students should choose universities that are well equipped, experienced, accredited by Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and an English-speaking student environment.

A degree that’s accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) means that it has achieved the education standards.

If you ever want or need to become a consulting, engineer, you must be licensed as an Ir or P.Eng. Only a Ir/P.Eng. can sign and seal engineering documents that are engineering documents that are submitted to a public authority or for public and private clients. Furthermore, many companies encourage licensure and some even pay a bonus for becoming a P.Eng.

In education, more universities are requiring a Ir/P.Eng. license to lecture in the engineering faculty or for holding certain positions. While, in some industries such as utilities, and government positions, a P.Eng. is required for specified jobs or positions.

With the engineering profession now operating in an international environment, licensing may be required to work in or for other countries. You will be prepared in the event your career moves in this direction (e.g. APEC Engineers, EMF Int. Engineer Register, Washington Accord). This means that you have the opportunity to work overseas and even migrate.

An engineer who has just graduated with a recognised qualification must register with the Board of Engineers Malaysia. He/she can then start to obtain the necessary training and experience, normally four years, before he/she can attempt to sit for the Professional Interview, an exam to qualify Graduate Members of IEM to be transferred to Corporate Members. Corporate Members of Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) can then apply to upgrade their status to P.Eng. with the Board of Engineers Malaysia.

What are the differences between electrical engineering and electronics engineering?

Multimedia University (MMU) Cyberjaya Engineering Student won the 2016 IEEE Malaysia ComSoc/VTS Joint Chapter Outstanding Dissertation Award

Electrical engineering deals with heavy current and high voltage circuits, control, machines, communications, power systems, power electronics, math, and computer technology related courses. Electrical engineering is an engineering discipline that deals with the study and application of electricity and electromagnetism. Its practitioners are called electrical engineers.

Electrical engineering is a broad field that encompasses many subfields. Electrical engineering has many subfields dealing with the various aspects of electromagnetism. Some work directly with Maxwell’s equations to manipulate RF signals, some with power, and some with signal manipulation. (Power engineering deals not only with electricity generation, electric power transmission, and electricity distribution but also with electrical circuits and materials (e.g. insulators, semiconductors) that need to withstand high voltages and

currents.)

Electronics engineering deals with light current and low voltage circuits, control, communications, integrated circuit, signal processing, math and basic courses on power system, power electronics, machines, and computer technology related courses.

Electronics engineers design and test electrical networks (more commonly known as circuits) that take advantage of electromagnetic properties of electrical components or discrete/elements (such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, transistors, diodes, semiconductors) to achieve the desired functionality. One of several ubiquitous examples is the tuner circuit, which allows the user of a radio to filter out all but a single station, corresponding to a desired signal frequency (such as those in AM and FM radios).

It’s hard to imagine just how small nanotechnology is. One nanometer is a billionth of a meter, or 10-9 of a meter. Here are a few illustrative examples:

  • There are 25,400,000 nanometers in an inch
  • A sheet of newspaper is about 100,000 nanometers thick
  • On a comparative scale, if a marble were a nanometer, then one meter would be the size of the Earth

Nanoscience and nanotechnology involve the ability to see and to control individual atoms and molecules. Everything on Earth is made up of atoms—the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the buildings and houses we live in, and our own bodies.

But something as small as an atom is impossible to see with the naked eye. In fact, it’s impossible to see with the microscopes typically used in a high school science classes. The microscopes needed to see things at the nanoscale were invented relatively recently—about 30 years ago.

Once scientists had the right tools, such as the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and the atomic force microscope (AFM), the age of nanotechnology was born.

Today’s scientists and engineers are finding a wide variety of ways to deliberately make materials at the nanoscale to take advantage of their enhanced properties such as higher strength, lighter weight, increased control of light spectrum, and greater chemical reactivity than their larger-scale counterparts.

What is a Nanotechnology Engineer?

Those who work with nanotechnology deal with materials and technologies on a microscopic level. As engineers, they might develop computer components or super-strong materials.

A nanotechnology engineer is someone who works around the smallest, most amazing fragments of science. From storing and altering things on the cellular level, to creating new, tiny pieces of electronics, nanotechnology engineers are the cream of the crop, possessing an acute attention to detail and a strong drive to make things better.

What does a Nanotechnology Engineer do?

From storing and altering things on the cellular level, to creating new, tiny pieces of electronics, nanotechnology engineers are the cream of the crop, possessing an acute attention to detail and a strong drive to make things better.

A nanotechnology engineer seeks to learn new things that can change the face of health, science, technology, and the environment on a molecular level. They test for pollutants, create powders to enrich our foods and medicines, and study the smallest fragments of DNA. They can even manipulate cells, proteins, and other chemicals from within the body.

Nanotechnology engineers take advanced supplies and materials and turn them into something new and exciting. They may try to make a once heavy invention work better while weighing less, making the object far more efficient. They may also create new and improved ways of watching out and improving the environment by creating innovative ways to test for contaminants and pollutants in the air, ground, and water.

Nanotechnology engineers may also choose to work in the medical field creating new gadgets that can fix problems on a scale as small as the molecular level, thus changing the face of medicine forever. Those involved with bio-systems will create ways to store the tiniest amounts of DNA or other biological fragments for testing and manipulation.

Nanotechnology engineers that work with nanoelectronics will create smaller, more efficient chips, cards, and even smaller computer parts to make products that can do as much as bigger products without so much electronic waste.

Behind the scenes, these engineers must be good at paperwork and detailed description writing. They are responsible for writing extremely detailed reports describing their findings in their specific experiments.

Who Should Study Nanotechnology Engineering?

  • Students who excel in Mathematics and Physics
  • Students who are curious and investigative individuals, meaning that you are intellectual, introspective, and inquisitive.
  • Students who are methodical, rational, analytical, and logical.
  • Some are also realistic, meaning that you are independent, stable, persistent, genuine, practical, and thrifty.

manufacture and maintenance of systems that use microprocessors and actuators to control mechanical processes.

Mechatronics engineers understand how to do this and enable the intelligent operation of mechanical systems. It also involves installing, operating and modifying mechanical and electronic equipment and in areas like manufacturing, aviation, robotics and defense.

Mechatronics engineers also have roles in project engineering where their cross disciplinary knowledge gives them an edge on mechanical or electrical engineers. Mechatronics engineers can work with electrical and mechanical systems together and solve problems that cross discipline boundaries. Their strength in IT, computer hardware and networking as well as software also helps them to be very versatile problem solvers.

Mechatronic Engineers are also involved in the design, construction and running of factory production lines and processes, where they use their skills in computers; micro-controllers; programmable logic controllers; programming; industrial sensors; hydraulic, pneumatic and electric drives; design of mechanical structures and mechanisms; and knowledge of manufacturing processes.
A mechatronics engineer unites the principles of mechanics, electronics, and computing to generate a simpler, more economical and reliable system. Its application areas range from power systems to transportation to optical telecommunications to biomedical engineering, along with a host of others.

Mechatronic systems are almost everywhere you look. For example, it can be applied to the automotive industry in the increasing combination of the mechanical part of the engine with electronics and artificial intelligence.

NASA Mars Rover

Another example is the Mars Rover that NASA built to send to planet Mars for research gathering purposes. The Mars Rover was the product of several years of research and development to ensure engineers on earth could effectively control the Rover on the unpredictable terrain of the planet Mars.

It had to be able to negotiate any terrain encountered as well as perform fine motions to grab and sample rock and soil – much like expecting a rugby union prop to also be an accomplished ballet dancer! Of course that call occurred after a brilliant and novel Mars landing strategy was developed.

Another Example: The anti-lock braking system
Cars need brakes. Cars have always had brakes. But the design of brakes has been improved over time, making them better, more responsive and safer. Now, thanks to modern sensing, actuation, computing and control technologies, braking systems are more amazing than ever before. Using technology to adjust the braking system in a split second has meant brakes are more responsive and deliver the greatest coefficient of friction possible.

It may sound a bit far-fetched but Mechatronic engineers create smart machines that are aware of their

surroundings and can make decisions. These smart machines are complex beings made up of several parts: the mechanical system itself, the sensing and actuation, the control systems and the software. The opportunities available to develop such intelligent machines are ever evolving.

The future is virtually unlimited for mechatronics, and much of it is here today. Robotic systems and components are already as small as a few microns and researchers are investigating nano-technologies using mechatronic systems for implantation into the human body to repair or replace damaged physiological functions.

The next two decades will see an explosion of automated mechatronic systems infiltrating our lives more and more every year – improving our quality of life and our knowledge of the world and universe we live in. Offices, homes, factories, and more are becoming more and more mechanised to be efficient.

What do Mechatronics Engineers work as in Malaysia?

Hanson, Foundation in Science (Engineering) at UCSI University

Mechatronics combines mechanical, electrical and software engineering in the design, development and control of diverse systems used in a range of industries including manufacturing, medicine and the service industries. Examples of mechatronic systems include aircraft, dishwashers, motor vehicles, automated manufacturing plants, medical and surgical devices and systems, robots of all types, many toys, artificial organs and many others.

There is an increasing demand for engineering graduates who are able to work in an interdisciplinary environment. Mechatronics Engineering is a new discipline that is combines electronics, control, software, computer and mechanical engineering.

Modern mechatronics is about the integration of electronics with mechanical design to create intelligent systems. From fuzzy logic controlled washing machines to space exploration, mechatronics and robotic systems are at the forefront of technological developments.

The word ‘mechatronics’ might still not be recognised by some dictionaries even today, but it has been in use for quite a while now. It first surfaced in Japan in the 1980s and represents the discipline of engineering that is associated with robots and automation. Without a doubt, the engineers who choose this field do share an interest in building robots that are able to perform a variety of functions, for one purpose or another.

Mechatronics engineers are therefore involved in almost every possible industry at levels from applications

In a nutshell, a mechatronic engineer is responsible for combining the elements of mechanical engineering and electronics engineering to design and develop mechatronic products. Elements of electrical engineering and computer science (in the form of software design and software engineering) play a part in the daily work of mechatronic engineers too.

Likewise, a Robotic Arm is a prime example of a mechatronics system because it includes aspects of mechanics, electronics, control and soft-computing to do its day-to-day jobs.

Engineers from different fields of expertise work in teams on projects. For example, in a project, the Electrical & Electronics Engineer will give an in-depth analysis on the Electrical characteristics while the Mechanical engineer focuses on the physical mechanics. The software engineer will provide the software for the machine to function. With knowledge from all areas, the mechatronics engineer will be an ideal project manager.
