The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) registers graduates and professional engineers under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 (Revised 2002). The requirement for registration as a graduate engineer is a degree in engineering recognised by the Board. A professional engineer (Ir or PEng) is a person who is licensed to practice to practice engineering in Malaysia after meeting all requirements of
the (e.g. pass PI Examination).
Only an Ir/P.Eng. can sign and seal engineering documents that are engineering documents that are submitted to a public authority or for public and private clients. This is very important especially for Civil Engineers who needs to become a Professional Engineer in order to sign the blueprints.
If you study at a university that is not accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), you cannot practice as a Civil Engineer.

Increase in Job Demand for Civil Engineers in Malaysia & Globally
School of Engineering & Science at Curtin University Sarawak
The recent surge in infrastructure spend by the Malaysian government can be seen as a product of the ripple effect across the region. The Klang Valley MY Rapid Transit (MRT) railway network around Kuala Lumpur, which will cost an estimated RM20bil to RM40bil to complete, will signal the beginning of a new era in transportation in the country.
This intra-city rail project is expected to not only significantly increase the rail network in the Klang Valley but also integrate the existing rail networks and lighten the traffic congestion in the KL metropolitan area.
Engineering graduates in Malaysia can look forward to directly benefitting from this massive project. The new three-line transportation backbone is expected to create an estimated 130,000 job opportunities during the period of its construction, and generate gross national income (GNI) of between RM3bil to RM4bil per annum from 2011 to 2020.
Another RM21bil per annum is expected to be generated throughout the ten-year span, in the form of

property value appreciation.
According to investment research firm OSK Research, Malaysia is likely to see its biggest residential property boom in a decade. The boom – which is arguably a side effect of the transportation infrastructure surge in the nation – will be led by medium- to high-end landed properties and is expected
One of the top engineering nations is the world, Germany has an estimated 1 million engineers for a population of 82 million (engineer:population ratio of 1:82). France has an estimated 800,000 for a population of 60 million (engineer:population ratio of 1:75). At present, the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) has a total register of 52,000 graduate and professional engineers.
Considering that a large number of engineers in Malaysia are not registered with BEM (around 50%), it is estimated that there are around 80,000 engineers currently in employment, i.e. still registering a very poor engineer:population ratio of 1:312 (assuming a current national population of 25 million).
Table shows engineer-population ratios for Malaysia and several advanced countries.

Therefore it is important for Malaysia to increase her production of engineers at a very significant rate in
Geomatic & Concrete Lab for Civil Engineering students at UCSI University
order to achieve a comparable index with the developed nations. If we were to use the “advanced nation benchmark” the engineer:population ratio of 1:100 would mean that Malaysia would need around 275,000 and 300,000 engineers in 5 and 10 years respectively (assuming population growth at 2% per year).
It is noted that in the Ninth Malaysia Plan presented by the Prime Minister of Malaysia in March 2006, the government plans to increase engineering student enrolment for public and private universities with the target annual growth rate of 12.2% and 20.8% respectively (Malaysia 2006a). In 2006, an estimated 10,571 students entered first year engineering studies in public and private universities.
Therefore with the expected growth, the government is projecting that more than 77,000 and 222,000 engineering graduates will be produced altogether from all the Malaysian universities in the next 5 and 10 years respectively.
If this projection is met, even after accounting for retirements, Malaysia will be able to match engineer : population ratios with those of advanced nations within 10 years
Who should study Civil Engineering?
I loved motorsports and EduSpiral gave me great advise to help guide me to achieve my dream. Justin Moo, Mechanical Engineering graduate from Taylor’s University
What does it take to be a civil engineer? In general, engineers need to enjoy the challenge of solving problems. Engineers should be creative, curious, analytical, and detail-oriented. They have to possess an aptitude for math and science.
Civil engineers usually work as part of a team from a wide range of fields. Therefore, apart from having good technical knowledge and aptitude, people skills are important. A good civil engineer have to demonstrate the ability to work with other people, good communication leadership skills. Civil engineers need a wide range of expertise. So if you’re interested in becoming a civil engineer, you should try to get good skills in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM subjects).
Most civil engineering projects need to be able to stand up to natural forces (like wind and water), and man-made forces (like vehicles, equipment and people). For example, civil engineers:
Design roads so they don’t sink into the ground when heavy lorries drive along them
Build flats so they don’t fall over when the wind blows
Construct tunnels so they don’t flood when it rains
You need to be able to understand and measure forces and movement, and to calculate the strength of the structures you’re designing. What you learn in maths and science – especially physics – will help you do this.
The structures that civil engineers design and build are mainly on the ground and have to be supported by
I went for the EduSpiral Education Fair and gained a lot of information. After the fair, EduSpiral even arranged to take me around for a campus tour, assisted me with application and accommodation as well. Nixonn Cheong, Engineering at UCSI University
the soil and rocks underneath them. The strength of the ground varies from place to place, and different rocks and soil have different properties (e.g. how quickly water drains through them). If you don’t want your structure to sink into the mud, you have to know about the various types of ground and design the right kind of foundations for the site. For this reason, studying geography or geology is also good idea.
As designers and innovators, civil engineers create things that didn’t exist before and do things in ways that haven’t been done before. They try to make our environment as attractive as possible by designing things that are interesting and pleasant to look at. They also make sure that these things blend in well with their surroundings. So if you’re creative and enjoy art and design and technology, these would be good subjects to study too.
Civil engineers usually work in teams and are often involved in projects in many parts of the world. This means that languages, teamwork and communication skills will also come in useful.

Civil engineers design things. These might be roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, or water supply and sewage systems. They must consider many factors in their designs, from the costs to making sure the structure will stay intact during bad weather.
Many civil engineers manage people and projects. A civil engineer may oversee a construction site or be a city engineer. Others

may work in design, construction, research, and teaching. There are many specialties within civil engineering, such as structural, construction, environment, and transportation.
Civil engineers usually work in areas where there is lots of manufacturing and businesses. Often they work at construction sites. Sometimes they work in places that are far away from cities. Some are required to travel.
Civil engineering is arguably the oldest engineering discipline. It deals with the built environment and can be dated to the first time someone placed a roof over his or her head or laid a tree trunk across a river to make it easier to get across.
The built environment encompasses much of what defines modern civilization. Buildings and bridges are often the first constructions that come to mind, as they are the most conspicuous creations of structural engineering, one of civil engineering’s major sub-disciplines.
Roads, railroads, subway systems, and airports are designed by transportation engineers, another category of civil engineering.
The diversity within civil engineering creates a wide choice of careers for its graduates. Most civil engineers work for consulting firms, manufacturers or government agencies. Engineering First Year (EFY) program at Curtin University Sarawak
The Engineering First Year (EFY) program prepares students to enter their second year in their chosen engineering discipline.
School of Engineering & Science at Curtin University Sarawak
EFY students learn mechanics, materials and electrical systems which provides a good physical understanding in order to design engineering solutions for the physical world.
Engineering solutions also require a mathematical and logical mind.
This aspect will be trained in the two engineering mathematics unit and one programming unit offered in the year.
Even the best engineering mind does not work in isolation. Now, more important than ever, engineers are expected to perform in teams and communicate with technical and non-technical people.
In semester one and semester two of EFY, we put students into multi-cultural groups to design, build and present engineering solutions.
These Problem Based Learning (PBL) approaches simulate the engineer’s working environment and better prepares student for their studies and the rigours of the working world. One of the strengths of the EFY program is students have the chance to change their course before entering second year. With the EFY program, students have one year to meet with senior students, academics and industry partners who can give a clearer and accurate sense of the many engineering discipline offered in Curtin Sarawak.

After completing the Diploma in Accounting, students can transfer your diploma credits into another top private university in Malaysia to enter into Year 2 of the degree for another 3 years depending on the exemptions. It will take about one to three weeks for the university to perform the exemption evaluation.
To perform exemptions, you will need to submit the following documents to the university of interest for exemption evaluation:
Transcripts for the subjects taken
Course outline for all subjects taken
Letter of Completion or Diploma Certificate
Copy of SPM certificate
PTPN Loan for Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Course in Malaysia
Upon completion of the Diploma in Accounting, students can consider transferring into top accounting and finance degree programmes at the best private universities in Malaysia.
Upon completion of the accounting degree programmes, graduates will have 9 paper exemptions from the total of 14 ACCA papers. I would recommend students who are weak in the English language to go for the accounting degree course first and then only pursue the ACCA. The ACCA is exam-based and marked in the UK.
Entry Requirements for Diploma in Accounting Courses in Malaysia
With any 3 credits in SPM including Maths and a Pass in BM & Sejarah, you can go for the Diploma in Accounting or Diploma in
Accountancy course at a top private university in Malaysia. After the 2-year diploma, you can continue on to Year 2 of the Degree at the same university or college if the degree course is offered. There is no need to perform exemptions if you continue on to degree at the same university.

Pathway to Becoming a Professional Accountant in Malaysia
Presently, Malaysia has about 7.5 million Accountants. The country requires another 60,000 Accountants to fulfill Vision 2020.
Ling posing with Acting Dean of School of Business Associate Professor Curtin University Sarawak Pauline Ho Poh Ling at the MICPA award ceremony.
All Accountants have to abide by a strict code of ethics and maintain high professional standards. All practising accountants must register with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA).
The Accountant Act, 1967 recognises an Accountant as one who is a member of MIA. MIA members can either be registered as Registered Accountants, RA(M) or Public Accountants, PA(M).
After SPM, with 5 credits, students can go into the Foundation in Business for a year and then continue into the degree for 3 years. The other way is to go for the Diploma in Business or Diploma in Accounting for 2 years and then enter into the Degree in Year 2 to finish that in another 2 years. You will need at least 3 credits in your SPM to join the diploma. After your degree, you can find a job and then take the final papers of the ACCA part time.
Why Study the Diploma instead of Foundation?
“I attended EduSpiral’s Education Fair at KInta Riverfront after my SPM exam in December and obtained great information there. Although Asia Pacific University is famous for IT but I found out that they have a solid accounting programme and I can get a UK degree. I got a scholarship as well from APU.” Julian Hum, from SMK St. Michael Institution, Ipoh studying Business at Asia Pacific University.
If you are sure of what course you want to study for your degree, you can just go straight into the Diploma course. If you are not sure of what you want to study in the degree, go for Foundation because you have one year to decide on what to take for your degree.
You can apply for the PTPN Loan for the Diploma while there is no loan for the Foundation.
In the diploma you will study subjects related to your course while in the Foundation, you will study general subjects mostly unrelated to your course. Some diploma courses are 2 years while others are 2.5 years.
If it is 2.5 years, you may take longer to complete your degree. If it is a 2-year diploma, then the time taken is the same to complete the degree when you take Foundation.
Diploma in Accounting graduates may get 4 papers exempted out of 15 papers of the ACCA programme. Students whose English is not very good, should go for the Diploma in Accounting.
SPM (3 relevant credits) – Diploma (2 or 2.5 years) – enter degree Year 2 (3 years)
Suggested accounting pathway for students in Malaysia with weak English
I was confused about what to study & where to study. EduSpiral spent a lot of time to explain the courses & which ones had bright careers. He also advised me to choose a university that has an English-speaking environment to help improve my language skills. Hui Ying, Diploma in Accounting leading to Finance Degree, Asia Pacific University
However, as we all know, the standard of English in Malaysia has dropped a lot. Some students thinking of going for accounting go into CAT and then the ACCA not realising that both are external papers and marked by the UK examiners.
Therefore, although these students may be capable in their knowledge but their weakness in the English language to write properly during the exams will lead them to fail these papers. Furthermore, the final 5 papers of the ACCA are not easy and if you attempt these papers while you are too young, can be challenging.
I would suggest that students go into an accounting diploma programme first and then into Year 2 of the Accounting degree where it is exempted from the 9 papers of the ACCA. Upon graduation, you find a job and then take the final 5 papers of the ACCA to become a professional accountant.
In choosing the university or college for the degree, you should go for a university where the students speak English mostly. Research by Star newspaper has shown that graduates with good command of the English language tend to get a higher salary (25%) and faster promotion. A lot of students like the easy way out and choose colleges and universities that are cheap and lacking in quality and facilities thinking that as long as they just get the qualification, they are alright.
They forget that if the quality of the university is low, the student’s quality will also be low when they graduate. You won’t have the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in the working world. Not being able to speak English well, you won’t be able to become a manager in a Multi National Company.
The management will not ask you to give a presentation if you cannot speak well and furthermore how are you going to be able to write a report? When you become an auditor, you will need to communicate with your client in English as well as your report.

How to Become a Professional Architect in Malaysia
If you are interested in creating things, buildings and spaces, technology, art and design, a career in architecture may be for you. Basically, an architect is a person who creates the designs of buildings. They don’t actually build them, that’s the job of the Civil Engineer. Architects role is like a project leader who works with different people to coordinate and get the building up on time within budget.
The architecture profession in Malaysia is protected by law and is regulated by the Lembaga Akitek Negara (LAM). They govern the entire profession starting from the definition of an architect under the Malaysian Constitution, licensing, practice, acts and enactments as well as education.
Another important body concerning architects is the Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) who takes care of the well being of the architects including professional development from the lowest to the highest qualifications. They also organise functions and activities for their members.
Gallery of architecture students’ work at UCSI University
Students after SPM or O-Levels interested to major in architecture can either go for the Diploma or the Foundation program in architecture in Malaysia.
Upon successful completion of the 1-year Foundation, they will then enter into the undergraduate degree in architecture for another 3 years at UCSI University which is accredited by Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) equivalent to LAM Part 1.
Students who have obtained the relevant results in STPM, UEC, A-Levels and other Pre-U Programmes can enter the architecture degree for 3 years. After the Bachelors in Architecture, the next step is to go into an accredited Masters in Architecture degree equivalent to LAM Part 2 for another 2 years. Architecture Masters Degree Graduates in Malaysia will then work for 2 years and then sit for the LAM Part 3 exams and then to finally become an architect.
The whole process after SPM will take you about 8 years to become a professional architect in Malaysia.
Shortage of Professional Architects in Malaysia
EduSpiral taking students on a tour of UCSI University’s Architecture Gallery and the North Wing campus
At the 2014 Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia -Tan Sri Ar Chan Sau Lai Architecture Award prize-giving ceremony today, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said that the current ratio of architects in Malaysia is one to 17,257 people.
There is a shortage of architects in Malaysia due to the low passing rate in the final test which would enable them to become professional architects, which carries the title of Ar.
There are only 1700 Registered Architects in Malaysia. The Average pass rate is 9%~20%
How to achieve Professional Architect (Ir.) status in Malaysia

The architecture profession in Malaysia is protected by law. The regulating and governing body of the architecture profession in
Malaysia is known as Lembaga Akitek Negara (LAM). They govern the entire profession starting from the definition of an architect under the Malaysian Constitution, licensing, practice, acts and enactments as well as education.
The other body that concerns the well being of architects themselves is Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia.
It functions as an association that takes care of its members, organize functions and manages the professional development of an architect from the lowest to highest qualification. Just like Bar exams for lawyers, architects also require certain level of qualification that is a standard worldwide.
The qualifications are known as LAM Part 1, 2 and 3. The equivalent of this is RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), AIA (American Institute of Architects) and RAIA (Royal Australian Institute of Architects).
The diagram above shows the career path of an architect. After graduating with Part 2, a person is known as an architect, and
UCSI University architecture students are taught by qualified experienced industry professionals
will be able to practice according to the job specification of an architect. This should be the minimum target of anyone pursuing this profession. Anything less is a waste of time.
These qualifications can be obtained in two ways:
Obtaining a fully accredited degree (or equivalent) that carries Part 1 or 2 equivalent.
Sitting for individual exams after obtaining a non-accredited degree for Part or 2.
Part 3 can only be obtained after practicing as an architect for a minimum of 2 years and fulfilling all the project requirements set by LAM.
Fulfilling these needs, the architect will then submit themselves to a series of interviews and exams to determine that they are capable and absolutely qualified. These exams are conducted by Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM).

Explaining the process verbally can be difficult for people to understand but a picture paints a thousand words as the saying goes.
Graphic designers work with drawn, painted, photographed, or computer-generated images (pictures), but they also design the letterforms that make up various typefaces found in movie credits and TV ads; in books, magazines, and menus; and even on computer screens.
Designers create, choose, and organize these elements-typography, images, and the so-called “white space” around them-to communicate a message. Graphic design is a part of your daily life. From small things like gum wrappers to huge things like billboards to the T-shirt you’re wearing, graphic design informs, persuades, organizes, stimulates, locates, identifies, attracts attention and provides pleasure.
Graphic design is a creative process that combines art and technology to communicate ideas. The designer works with a variety of communication tools in order to convey a message from a client to a particular audience. The main tools are image and typography.Typography is basically the Font or style of the words used.
In order to succeed in the competitive world of graphic design, students must choose the best college in graphic designin Malaysia to study at so that they can gain the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed.

Study Civil Engineering if you like Maths & Physics in SPM or O-Levels
School of Engineering & Science at one of the best universities in Malaysia for engineering – Curtin University Sarawak
The structures that civil engineers design and build are mainly on the ground and have to be supported by

the soil and rocks underneath them.
This means that languages, teamwork and communication skills will also come in useful.

projects. It involves the planning, design, supervising, construction and maintaining of facilities for both the public and private sectors.
Civil Engineering involves the design and construction of buildings, transportation facilities and engineering structures like bridges, dams, roads, airports, tunnels, bridges, water supply and sewage systems, waste treatment, harbours, railways, highways and other public utilities.
Civil engineers may specialise in particular areas of major works such as structural engineering, water resources, construction, environmental, transportation, and geotechnical engineering.
They must consider many factors in the design process, from the construction costs and expected lifetime of a project to government regulations and potential environmental hazards such as landslides, floods, earthquakes and hurricanes.
Creativity and innovation are needed to solve problems such as the SMART Tunnel which solves transportation and flood problems or the Mass Rapid Transportation (MRT) currently being built in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The job prospects are good for Civil Engineers in Malaysia as the country is still growing and major companies also have projects in developing countries.
