How to Become a Professional Architect in Malaysia
If you are interested in creating things, buildings and spaces, technology, art and design, a career in architecture may be for you. Basically, an architect is a person who creates the designs of buildings. They don’t actually build them, that’s the job of the Civil Engineer. Architects role is like a project leader who works with different people to coordinate and get the building up on time within budget.
The architecture profession in Malaysia is protected by law and is regulated by the Lembaga Akitek Negara (LAM). They govern the entire profession starting from the definition of an architect under the Malaysian Constitution, licensing, practice, acts and enactments as well as education.
Another important body concerning architects is the Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) who takes care of the well being of the architects including professional development from the lowest to the highest qualifications. They also organise functions and activities for their members.

Students after SPM or O-Levels interested to major in architecture can either go for the Diploma or the Foundation program in architecture in Malaysia.
Upon successful completion of the 1-year Foundation, they will then enter into the undergraduate degree in architecture for another 3 years at UCSI University which is accredited by Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) equivalent to LAM Part 1.
Students who have obtained the relevant results in STPM, UEC, A-Levels and other Pre-U Programmes can enter the architecture degree for 3 years. After the Bachelors in Architecture, the next step is to go into an accredited Masters in Architecture degree equivalent to LAM Part 2 for another 2 years. Architecture Masters Degree Graduates in Malaysia will then work for 2 years and then sit for the LAM Part 3 exams and then to finally become an architect.
The whole process after SPM will take you about 8 years to become a professional architect in Malaysia.

Malaysia is known as Lembaga Akitek Negara (LAM). They govern the entire profession starting from the definition of an architect under the Malaysian Constitution, licensing, practice, acts and enactments as well as education.
The other body that concerns the well being of architects themselves is Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia.
It functions as an association that takes care of its members, organize functions and manages the professional development of an architect from the lowest to highest qualification. Just like Bar exams for lawyers, architects also require certain level of qualification that is a standard worldwide.
The qualifications are known as LAM Part 1, 2 and 3. The equivalent of this is RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), AIA (American Institute of Architects) and RAIA (Royal Australian Institute of Architects).
The diagram above shows the career path of an architect. After graduating with Part 2, a person is known as an architect, and
UCSI University architecture students are taught by qualified experienced industry professionals
will be able to practice according to the job specification of an architect. This should be the minimum target of anyone pursuing this profession. Anything less is a waste of time.
These qualifications can be obtained in two ways:
Obtaining a fully accredited degree (or equivalent) that carries Part 1 or 2 equivalent.
Sitting for individual exams after obtaining a non-accredited degree for Part or 2.
Part 3 can only be obtained after practicing as an architect for a minimum of 2 years and fulfilling all the project requirements set by LAM.
Fulfilling these needs, the architect will then submit themselves to a series of interviews and exams to determine that they are capable and absolutely qualified. These exams are conducted by Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM).

act as great foundations for careers in other industries. It isn’t uncommon to find top quality engineers in banking, politics and financial sectors. Many graduates do not work in the field that they graduate in. This is normal.
Before starting your career in engineering it is important to know which engineering field you would like to specialise in because of the variety of sectors within the engineering industry. If you are certain of what type of engineer you wish to become, you should study a degree which focuses specifically on that field of study.
If you are not sure, that is still alright as students after SPM or O-Levels can take the Foundation course at a reputable private university for one year. During that one year, you should talk to the seniors and lecturers to figure out which engineering field best fits you.
To enter into the Foundation in Engineering or Foundation in Science, students after SPM or O-Levels will need at least 5 credits including Maths and Physics (Chemistry for Chemical Engineering) and pass in BM and Sejarah. With 3 credits in SPM including Maths and a Science subject, students can join the Diploma in Engineering course before entering into Year 2 of the Degree course.

Which Engineering degree in Malaysia is right for me?
I was not happy at my former university and found EduSpiral online. He gave me good advise and even met up with me at KDU to tour the college. Ong Richard, Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering at KDU University College Penang
It’s important to consider which area of engineering you will specialise in, as they can lead to very different careers. Civil engineers build the structures that define our civilisation – bridges, buildings, transport systems. Electrical engineers study how technology can build new products, or develop new processes for manufacturing and design.
Or you could design and build planes, aircraft, robots, medical equipment, or even computer programmes. Whatever you choose, you can create and develop projects that improve and change lives.
Chemical Engineering... is the branch of engineering that deals with the application of physical science (e.g., chemistry and physics), and life sciences (e.g., biology, microbiology and biochemistry) with mathematics and economics, to the process of converting raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms. Chemical engineers ensure the processes are operated safely, sustainably and economically when converting raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms.
Civil Engineering… is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction,

and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like bridges, roads, canals, dams and buildings. It is traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines including environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, municipal or urban engineering, water resources engineering, materials engineering, coastal engineering, surveying, and construction engineering. Civil engineering takes place on all levels: in the public sector and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.
Electrical Engineering… is a field of engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. It now covers a range of subtopics including power, electronics, control systems, signal processing and telecommunications. Usually electrical engineering is considered to deal with the problems associated with large-scale electrical systems such as power transmission and motor control, whereas electronic engineering deals with the study of small-scale electronic systems including computers and integrated circuits

materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the production and usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of machines and tools. It is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines.
The mechanical engineering field requires understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, and structural analysis. Mechanical engineers use these core principles along with tools like computer-aided engineering and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, motorized vehicles, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices and more.
Computer Engineering… deals with the design of computers and computer systems. This may involve the design of new hardware, the design of PDAs, USBs or the use of computers to control an industrial plant. Computer engineers may also work on a system’s software. However, the design of complex software systems is often the domain of software engineering, which is usually considered a separate discipline. Desktop computers represent a tiny fraction of the devices a computer engineer might work on, as computer-like architectures are now found in a range of devices including video game consoles and DVD players.
Mechatronics Engineering… is an engineering discipline which deals with the convergence of electrical and mechanical systems. Such combined systems are known as electromechanical systems and have widespread adoption. Examples include automated manufacturing systems, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems and various subsystems of aircraft and automobiles.

On a personal level, you will need to be confident, motivated and flexible.
In order to study engineering in Malaysia, you’ll obviously need a strong interest in problem solving, and maths and science, just as we discussed before, but you’ll also need a strong command of the English language. You’ll be spending a lot of time in the laboratory and you’ll be using your computer and maths skills a lot, in theory and practical work. There will be a lot of problem solving, and applying this to case studies, as well as work experience and theory essays.
As a general rule you’ll need to be good in maths, physics, chemistry and biology, and if you’re heading into a more specific area you’ll need to check out the specialist subjects for that, as they vary hugely. This is why it’s very important to decide on your subject quite soon, as you may need a different A level requirement, however as a general rule, maths and sciences are your basic needs.
You can contact EduSpiral Consultant Services to get a clearer idea on your specific requirements with regards to this, and ask about language support whilst you’re on campus.
What will a degree in Engineering cost at a top private university in Malaysia?
After starting class at college, I was still confused if the course suited me. I took a bus from Seremban to meet up with EduSpiral for counseling. I have a clearer picture of what to do now. Kuang Joe, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at HELP College of Arts & Technology
Obviously the course you choose and the university will all make a difference to how much the degree will cost in terms of tuition fees, and you should talk to your parents about how much they have set aside for your studies, as this will go a long way into funding your engineering study adventure.
As a general rule, and again, this depends on a lot of factors, you can expect a cost of around RM80,000 to RM180,000 total for the tuition fees for 4 years. You should be able to get help and advice on living arrangements from EduSpiral and the cost of living very much depends on which city you choose to study in. Most private universities in Malaysia will have on-campus accommodation and off-campus accommodation. It’s simply a case of looking into your options and your preferences.
As you can see, choosing engineering as your career means a lot of decisions to make, not only regarding the road you see your future career going down, in terms of the type of engineering you want to specialise in, but also the general things about studying abroad, such as the single most important one – which university?!
Shortage of Qualified Engineers in Malaysia
Choosing the course & university can change your life forever, so make this decision wisely. Pic – students on tour of UCSI University’s Engineering & Architecture campus
There is a shortage of qualified engineers in Malaysia suitable for the crucial role of overseeing construction projects and infrastructure development works, according to the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM).
IEM president Datuk Lim Chow Hock told StarBiz that there were only about 150,000 experienced engineers in Malaysia.
“We are still short of 50,000 to meet the requirement in the construction and infrastructure sectors. The experienced engineers are needed in the consultation and management departments,” he said. Lim added that the demand for consultation and management engineers for government construction and infrastructure projects would mitigate the impact of the slowdown taking place in the construction industry.
“About 70% of our members are engineers in the development and construction sectors. “They can easily be reabsorbed to play consultation and management roles for government projects,” he said.
Lim added that about 30% of the members were involved in the electrical, electronic, and mechanical engineering industries. The IEM currently has about 43,000 members.
On the quality of the local engineering graduates, Lim said that there was concern on quality because a study done three years ago by IEM revealed that the local engineering graduates lacked certain fundamental understanding of engineering principles. “This is affecting their ability to execute their duties effectively.

How to Choose the Best Course to Study in Malaysia or Singapore after UEC?
After UEC, there are many different pathways for you to choose from and sometimes it can be confusing.
I couldn’t decide which university to go to after my UEC and talking to EduSpiral helped me make the right choice. Kah Wai, Food Science & Nutrition at UCSI University
With the wide variety of courses available to a student in Malaysia, the time after your UEC can be a confusing one if not guided properly by an experienced and knowledgeable education counselor. It can be overwhelming for students to choose the right major for their undergraduate degree studies in Malaysia. Preparations should have been made even before this time but fear not it is still not too late if you have not decided on a career path. It is important for you to research carefully the career that you intend to pursue.
Look at your results – what are your best & worst subjects, and which subjects are your favourite?
What are your interests & hobbies?
What is your passion?
Job demand for the career of choice. There is no point in choosing a course out of passion and then graduate to find out that you cannot get a job in that field.
Salary of the career of choice
Discuss the budget for your studies with your parents. There is no point in choosing a course like Pharmacy or Medicine, if you cannot afford it.
What You Should Know if You Decide to Study in Taiwan after UEC
I was lost after my UEC & my friend introduced me to EduSpiral. He gave good advise and helped me to apply to study in Singapore. Lucky Lee, Business at MDIS Singapore
According to Channel News Asia, today, young Taiwanese face dim job prospects. They have been dubbed the “22k” generation — a reference to their minimum monthly salary of NT$22,000, which works out to just over S$1,000. Youth unemployment is more than 12 per cent, and many young Taiwanese are disillusioned.
“Most of my friends who studied overseas do not want to come back to work in Taiwan because of the low pay here,” said Mr Liao Jin-chuan, 30, a private tutor who earns about NT40,000 a month (S$1,685) and lives with his parents in New Taipei City.
Some students who are not good in the English language choose to study in Taiwan because it is easier. However, do note that according to a report by Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) of the Prime Minister’s Department late last year where it was cited that 48 per cent of employers reject students due to poor English. Unless you plan not to return to Malaysia to work, then that’s ok. If you do plan to stay on and work in Taiwan, do note that the salary for fresh graduates there is low and cost of living is high.
The Ministry of Labor (MOL) of Taiwan released a survey on starting salaries in various industries in 2014, indicating that the average starting monthly salary for graduates fresh out of school stood at NT$25,175 per year.
Youth Unemployment Rate in Taiwan averaged 12.91 percent from 2014 until 2015, reaching an all time high of 14.02 percent in August of 2014. Youth Unemployment Rate in Taiwan is reported by the National Statistics Republic of China (Taiwan). Now, if the Taiwanese graduates are having difficulty in securing a job, I am sure that the companies there would not be open to hiring foreigners first like you.
Learning to be good in the English language doesn’t make one less Chinese. After all, you are already good
“I attended EduSpiral’s Education Fair at KInta Riverfront after my SPM exam and obtained great information there. Although Asia Pacific University is famous for IT but I found out that they have a solid accounting programme and I can get a UK degree. I got a scholarship as well from APU.” Julian Hum, Accounting at Asia Pacific University
in Mandarin, why go to a university where everyone communicates in Mandarin so how are you going to improve your English? Many students proudly tell me, well, the lecturers teach in English and I will take an English course to improve. Then my point is, after 12 years of education at secondary school and you still haven’t improved your English, what makes you think that you can improve it in 4 years in the same environment as your school?
The other argument I hear is, “China is the world’s second economy and very important, so I can work there.” My reply to that is, well, China has more than 1.6 Billion people there and many degree graduates cannot get jobs, what makes you think that you have the extra skills to compete with them?
The only reason why I emphasise the importance of English is so that you have a better future. Language is not easily learnt overnight. The best time to improve it is during secondary school, if you didn’t, then university time is another opportunity.
When you start working, you will be too tired. You will be focused on your girl friend or boy friend, earning money to buy a car or house, and so forth.
What you decide today, can change your life forever, think about it.
Choosing the Right University to Study after UEC in Malaysia
It is also important to choose the right university that would equip you with the necessary knowledge and
EduSpiral picked us up from KL Sentral & took us to Asia Pacific University for a campus tour as well as arranged the Software Engineering lecturer to explain the courses in detail to us. Chin Mun (Left) with friends from INTI, now studying Business Computing at APU
skills to move up in your career. Many students make the mistake of choosing the cheapest university for their studies and then later realise that they cannot get the promotion or salary increment because they did not get the skills needed. English is one of these skills that most students do not take seriously about its importance for promotion and salary increments in future jobs.
Think about it, if you are unable to write a report or email in proper English or do a presentation smoothly, how would you be able to become a manager or CEO eventually?
Go for education fairs and talk to the lecturers and counselors but do not register to quickly. Listen to their advise and take the information and then talk to your parents. Remember that the colleges and universities want your money for their “business” so they will want you to register quickly.
Take time to think carefully and do not be taken in by the sales gimmicks of getting a car or iPad or discount if you register on the spot.
Talk to the various counsellors at the booths to find out more information about the individual careers. Ask about tuition costs, short description of the career, job prospects, facilities offered in the college, and others. Check with them to see if the course is accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), if you can apply for the PTPTN loan and how much you can apply for, how long is the course, etc.
Students should also visit the university’s campus to get a feel of what the student environment is like,
look at the facilities and talk to the lecturers. EduSpiral Consultant Services provides a free campus visit to our partner universities.
Good English Improves Confidence and Communication Skills Therefore Increasing Chance of Promotion
After my Diploma at TARC, I wanted to continue on in Penang for my degree but after talking to EduSpiral, I decided to go to KL so that I can improve my English so that I can have a successful career. Chun Khin, Finance degree at HELP University
Professional recruitment consultancy Robert Walters Malaysia country manager Sally Raj said English language proficiency could increase personal earning power. “This is particularly true for professionals within a client-facing role where communication skills are vital, good English skills will help them articulate and sell their ideas better. It will also aid them in working in a multinational corporation, where they need to communicate with various nationalities,” she said. She also agreed that higher English language proficiency would help attract and increase foreign direct investment (FDI) into Malaysia.
“Most foreign multinationals look for professionals who they are able to train for the role, meaning that higher English language proficiency would be one of the key factors that would draw them to Malaysia,” she said. Manpower Staffing Services (M) Sdn Bhd country manager Sam Haggag said it was widely recognised that fluency in the English language was a prerequisite to getting a job.
“Employees with good English communication skills tend to be more confident and thus representing the organisation better, putting the organisation in a positive light. Therefore, these employees are able to gain higher positions in the organisation,” he said.
It does not matter if you are top of your class or have a string of degrees, that dream job will not be yours unless you can speak and write well in English. Feedback from local and international employers shows that verbal and written communication skills in English remain the most sought-after attribute in prospective employees.
Malaysian Employers Look for Graduates with Good Communication SKills
According to a recent Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) survey, it is the most important trait
I was confused about what to study & where to study. EduSpiral spent a lot of time to explain the courses & which ones had bright careers. He also advised me to choose a university that has an English-speaking environment to help improve my language skills. Hui Ying, Diploma in Accounting leading to Finance Degree, Asia Pacific University
employers look for when recruiting graduates. The MEF Salary Survey for Executives 2010 revealed that 68% of the companies surveyed named communication skills as the top quality required in job applicants, followed by working experience (67%), interpersonal skills (56.2%) and passion and commitment (55.7%).
MEF executive director Shamsuddin Bardan said globalisation had changed the nature of jobs, making communication skills, specifically in English, a valuable asset for today’s worker. He added that this was an essential criterion even for professions traditionally seen as “backroom” staff such as engineers, technical personnel and scientists. “It is especially so for those working in multinationals and bigger firms,” he said.
“Today, our clients are worldwide. In factories, for instance, engineers are a different breed from the past,” said Shamsuddin.
“Now, they have to be involved in various aspects of business and interact with clients.” Shamsuddin expressed concern that many local graduates today could not speak or write proper English, saying this was a reason why they faced difficulties getting jobs in the private sector.
Kelly Services (M) Sdn Bhd managing director Melissa Norman concurred, noting that six in 10 graduates who attended its interviews could not communicate effectively in English. The company is one of the top headhunters in the country. Norman said it was important to master English as it was widely used among the business community, both in Malaysia and internationally.
The Kelly Global Workforce Index survey released in 2010 listed “communication skills” as one of the top five most desired skills within the corporate sector. “We have encountered local graduates who are weak in spoken and written English and have limited vocabulary,” said Norman. “These candidates can only manage to secure jobs in small-medium enterprises and small businesses.”
Help! I don’t know what course to choose to study at university- what do I do?
It is important to choose the right course to study – you don’t want to waste your time and money on a
EduSpiral Consultant Services staff have more than 15 years experience in counseling students
course you don’t want to do (or end up dropping out of). To help you decide which course is right for you, make a list of courses that are of interest to you.
Is it a subject you have already studied? For example, maybe you loved the English subject and you read novels for pleasure in your own time. You can consider Teaching English as a Second Language, journalism or Mass Communication. In addition, you don’t have to do a journalism degree to become a journalist – many degrees are considered!
Maybe you’ve always been interested in computers and the internet at home, and enjoyed maths at school, so are considering a degree in computer science, a course subject you probably won’t have studied before. Experienced education counselors are able to analyse your interests, personality and exam results to help you make a list of possible courses for consideration.
Looking at your results in UEC could help you to decide which course you would be good at. If you are good in Maths & Physics then you can consider Engineering courses. Having good results in Chemistry, Biology & Maths, you can think of a career in Food Science, Pharmacy or Medicine. Talking to an experienced education advisor would help you to navigate through this confusing time of choosing the best course that fits you.
Many students after UEC make the mistake of just listening to advise without verifying whether the
My friend introduced me to EduSpiral because for a long time after SPM I still did not know what and where to study. EduSpiral took time to explain the courses to me and even took me around the university for a tour. Yammie Chau, Diploma in Business at UCSI University
information given is true or not. In addition, just because you have heard or seen a lot of advertisements by a particular university, doesn’t mean that it is the best in that course.
Many of the course counselors at the universities are paid by the universities to get you to register there, so their main motivation is to get you to register, not to help you make the right choice.
You should also ask yourself if you would still be interested in that subject for a further three or four years – enough to motivate yourself to work and research independently? Remember, you are going to work in this career for the next 50 years after graduation, therefore, you should have a high interest in the course.
The course that you choose should also have a job demand for you after you graduate. Choosing a course that you are passionate about without job demand and you may end up being jobless. Look for statistics and research to support whether there is a job demand for your future career in Malaysia or Singapore. Here at EduSpiral Consultant Services, we do our research on the job demand for the careers in Malaysia, Salary Reports, and universities so that we can advise our students based on facts and evidence.
Look at the Course Content of the Degree Programmes.Even though the title of the degree programme is the same at various universities, the course content or subjects offered are different. You should look at the subjects from the universities and compare. Make sure that they are solid enough to prepare you for a successful career in Malaysia or Singapore.
Now why would you want to talk to EduSpiral Consultant Services when you can contact the private universities directly? Well, EduSpiral Consultant Services staff have more than 15 years experience in counseling students. Having worked in the private education industry, we have in-depth knowledge of each private university and college in what they are good at.
We have worked with our partner universities and colleges for many years while the counselors at the private universities or agents’ offices change every few years therefore they would not have the in-depth knowledge of the courses and the university that they are working at.
What am I good at? What am I not good at?
I whatsapped EduSpiral to ask about the best engineering college in Penang. I was also considering a cheaper college but EduSpiral shared that good facilities, personal attention from lecturers & an English-speaking environment is important for a successful future. So, I decided to join KDU College Penang. Richard Ong, Electrical & Electronic Engineering at KDU College Penang
An undergraduate degree course in Malaysia lasts three to five years – that’s a long time to spend studying something which you don’t enjoy, especially at a more intense level! First of all ask yourself what you have enjoyed studying at secondary school in Malaysia.
Your UEC results will show what you are actually good at. Having good results in Maths, you can consider Actuarial Science, Accounting, Computing or Finance courses. Having narrowed down to these courses, you can go for the Foundation in Arts for 1 year before really choosing which one to study for your degree.
Alternatively you can also think about subjects you definitely don’t want to study at university level and which you can’t wait to say goodbye to. Crossing these off will make your list of options smaller and less overwhelming.
Your parents and friends would also be able to give you an idea of what you are good at. Looking at your hobbies and interests would help to narrow down the list. Your hobby in drawing could open the possibility of choosing design courses.
What qualifications do I have already?
You may already have an idea of the area you want to study and find a career in, which will have dictated what subjects you’re already studying at school. However it’s good to look at the qualifications and grades you have (or are predicted to have) to see what you are already eligible to study. Students need to be realistic in choosing their course of study by looking at their actual results. If your actual results do not meet the entry requirements for your particular course of interest, then you may need to consider other options.
What are my interests?
If you can’t think of an academic subject which you’re especially strong at or one which you would want to pursue at university-level, think about your non-academic interests outside of school. It’s likely that you’re much more passionate about these but you’ve never even thought you could study a course related to these (or pursue a career in this area).
Your hobbies, interests and which clubs & societies that you have joined in secondary school would give you some idea of what you are good at. These, together with your actual results would contribute to your decision-making process in choosing the right course of study.
New courses are being created all the time to prepare and develop talent for growing industries, such as animation or computer game design. Projects, events and knowledge related to these interests can all contribute to show that you’re passionate about this area and eligible to study on a course which can prepare you for a related career.
In other cases there may be several routes to your dream career, some of which may allow you to study something different before transferring or. Talk to those who are already working in this area to see how they got to where they are now, including what they studied (or even what they wish they had studied).

Points for UEC Graduates on How to Choose a Top Private University to Study at in Malaysia or Singapore
I couldn’t decide which university to go to after my UEC and talking to EduSpiral helped me make the right choice. Kah Wai, Food Science & Nutrition at UCSI University
Starting your university search with the basics will help you identify the universities that will best suit you academically and personally. Each of us has unique needs and values, and what is important to you may not matter to someone else.
Being a sports enthusiast, you may want a university that has the facilities to support your lifestyle. The same goes for school size, cost, and other basic college criteria. By identifying your needs, you can narrow down which universities and focus on the things that will make your university a perfect fit.
Which course do you want to Study in Malaysia?
Knowing which course you want to study will help in determining which university. Just like signature dishes for restaurants, certain private universities are famous for particular courses. Choosing the best university for that course would ensure that you benefit from their experience.
When buying a mobile phone, you would have a budget in mind and with that budget you can filter out which phones you can or cannot afford. It is the same with choosing a private university. You need to have a budget in mind so that you can filter out which universities that you can afford to study at.
Many students have chosen the cheapest private university to study, not taking into consideration the important skills that they could have gained from a better university. Higher education is an investment for a better future that takes sacrifice.
Degree Programmes offered at Private Universities in Malaysia or Singapore
Not all degree programmes bearing the same title are the same at all universities. A business administration degree at university A is not the same as at university B. Students must look at the subjects offered in the diploma or degree to see if they relevant, up-to-date, and help you to achieve your career goals.
Accreditation by MQA and other relevant professional bodies in Malaysia
EduSpiral took these students separately to tour the campus and provided course counseling to help them make the right choice. Kian Yong (Mechanical Engineering), Yammie (Business), & Kenneth Pang (Architecture) at UCSI University’s Orientation
All foundation, diploma and degree programmes must be accredited by MQA in Malaysia. Taking a professional certificate course with a title “diploma” would not allow you to continue on into a degree programme accredited by MQA.
If you want to become a lawyer, you must take the A-Levels and have a credit for SPM Bahasa Malaysia subject. I had one student who took a Diploma in Law at a college in Sarawak and then realise that he could not become a lawyer in the end because he doesn’t have A-Levels.
Type of programme offered in Malaysia
Students should research on the different types of degree programmes that they are interested in such as a local degree, 3+0 UK or Australian degree, 4+0 American degree, degree transfer programme, etc
A 3+0 UK degree would follow the syllabus of the UK partner university. A UK education style is different from an Australian or American education. Therefore, you will need to determine which style best suits you.
Entry requirements to study at Private Universities in Malaysia
I was lost after my UEC & my friend introduced me to EduSpiral. He gave good advise and helped me to apply to study in Singapore. Lucky Lee, Business at MDIS Singapore
Sometimes you may want to study a course but you may not have the results to enter the course. Arts stream students would not be able to enter into science related degree courses except for engineering. Branch campuses in Malaysia have higher entry requirements as well.
Generally, you will need at least 5Bs in UEC to enter into a degree programme at a private university in Malaysia. Entry requirements will vary from course to course and also from university to university.
If you only managed to obtain 3Bs in UEC, you may go for the Diploma course for 2 years and then enter into the degree Year 2 for another 2 or 3 years depending on which course.
Location of the Private University
Some students have told me that they just want to study at a university nearest to their home. That may not be the best reason in choosing a university although it may be convenient for you. A private university in a city setting like Kuala Lumpur or Singapore would expose you to independent living and modern-minded students who would help shape your character.
Studying in Singapore is in a safe & modern environment with world-class education system.
Student Culture of the Private University in Malaysia
EduSpiral emphasised the importance of having good English for our future career. I am glad to join a globalised university which has helped me to improve my communication skills. Vincent Yeoh, Accounting & Finance at Asia Pacific University
The overall culture of your college may play as big a role in your future success as your degree. Figuring out what’s important to you will help you narrow the field when choosing a private college or university in Malaysia or Singapore, and you may discover some options that hadn’t even been on your radar!
Many students have chosen the cheapest private university to study, not taking into consideration the important skills that they could have gained from a better university. Higher education is an investment for a better future that takes sacrifice.
It is important to choose a private university in Malaysia or Singapore that has an English-speaking environment, students who are ambitious and serious about studies, and a globalised student body. Mixing around with international students will help to improve your English language skills and understanding of different cultures.
Some private universities in Malaysia are known for their focus on lifestyle or known as party universities. There is nothing wrong with choosing them if you are able to control yourself. If not, you have to consider that this could affect your future.
Make up of the student body at a top private university in Malaysia
EduSpiral explained the pathway to become an actuaries & gave facts on why Heriot-Watt is the best for actuarial science. We also toured the campus and hostel. Weng Hang, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia
A private university that has a diverse student body with many international students would help students to improve their English-language and cross-cultural communication skills. With globalisation, many top companies in the world are looking for professionals who are dynamic with strong management skills to lead a globalised work force.
Cost, scholarships, and financial aid (tuition, hostel, food, transportation, etc.)
The cost of studying at university is one thing that most parents think about during the college search process. Not all colleges and universities in Malaysia or Singapore have the same price tag and there are a variety of ways to cut your costs. Most universities offer scholarships, and students are able to apply for the PTPN Loan, EPF withdrawal, MARA Loan, etc
Campus resources
Students should visit the universities campuses to look at the labs, libraries, sports facilities, etc. While visiting, you can also get a feel of the student culture to see if it fits you.
Qualified & experienced faculty at the University in Malaysia
