Asia Pacific University (APU) Cybersecurity Students Win Big
Organised by Silensec and Cyber8Labs, Australia, the competition was a virtual competition that took place around the globe. Our teams prepared and went through the competition’s challenges at our Cyber Range, while they competed among 12 participating teams that came from 9 countries.
Throughout the 5 hours of the competition, teams had to make use of their Incident Response skills to detect, respond and recover from cyber-attacks. It was an intense competition, as the teams’ capability were tested greatly through the challenging case scenarios, combined with the emergence of several vulnerabilities throughout the duration of the challenge. At the end of the challenge, both APU teams defeated their competitors and emerged as the TOP 2 TEAMS of the challenge!
At a recent prize giving ceremony held at our campus, both teams received their awards and certificates from Ms. Daisy Sinclair, Founder of Cyber8Lab Pty. Ltd., Australia, who flew here all the way from Australia to attend the ceremony.
CONGRATULATIONS to teams Shellhound & Et3rnal – thank you so much for making us proud! This achievement has once again proven that our students are capable to compete globally, as cybersecurity professionals of the future. The skills and knowledge possessed by them do not fall short of those who come from developed countries, and as graduates from a Malaysian university, they are definitely capable of standing in the eyes of the world!
Kudos to the teams’ mentors, Ms. Yusnita Yusof & Ms. Nor Azlina Abdul Rahman for their passion and dedication in leading the teams towards their success. Members of the 2 teams comprised:
This spectacular achievement was announced by the Cybersecurity Excellence Awards 2020 committee on their website. All nominations submitted were subjected to a judging process based on the demonstration of leadership, excellence and results in cybersecurity and a voting process by the Information Security Community, which consists of 400,000+ members on LinkedIn.
What is making this achievement greater is the fact that APU is receiving this award for the 2nd time in a row! As a continuation of APU’s excellence since last year, we stood out among all nominations for our excellence in providing high-quality cybersecurity education, particularly through world-class facilities housed at the CyberSecurity Talent Zone and the outstanding competence demonstrated by our academic team.
The honour has also been recognized by Cybersecurity Insiders on their website.

How to Choose the Best University for Diploma in Computer Science & IT to Study in Malaysia?
EduSpiral counseled us online & then picked us up from the airport to visit MMU in order to help us choose the right university. Mak, Ong & Chaw – Diploma in Information Technology (IT) at Multimedia University (MMU)
Part of finding the right college or university in Malaysia for you will, of course, be picking out the criteria that matters to most to you, and then seeing if any of the top private colleges or universities in Malaysia that you’re looking at fit those criteria.
When choosing the Diploma in Computer Science & IT to study at a private university in Malaysia, it is important to look at the subjects offered to see if they fit with your academic & career goals. Compare course outlines and academic facilities between universities to make sure you make the right choice for your educational needs and preferences. Many students make the mistake of assuming that all Diploma in Computer Science & IT courses at all universities are the same. They are not.
Have a look at the subjects you must undertake and the types of learning, assignments and examination tasks involved.
Secondly, look at the number of awards that the university has won in the area of computer science & IT. This will give you an idea of how good they are. Having won an award shows the level of capability of the students and lecturers.
In addition, the facilities are important to your learning experience. For example, Asia Pacific University (APU) has a RM15 Million Cyber Security Talent Zone while UOWM KDU has a few Alienware Labs.
Furthermore, the overall culture of the university may play as big a role in your future success as your degree. Figuring out what’s important to you will help you narrow the field when choosing a private college or university in Malaysia and you may discover some options that hadn’t even been on your radar!
Many students have chosen the cheapest private university to study, not taking into consideration the important skills that they could have gained from a better university. Higher education is an investment for a better future that takes sacrifice.

It is important to choose a private university in Malaysia that has an English-speaking environment, students who are ambitious and serious about studies, and a globalised student body. Mixing around with international students will help to improve your English language skills and understanding of different cultures.
A private university that has a diverse student body with many international students would help students to improve their English-language and cross-cultural communication skills. With globalisation, many top companies in the world are looking for professionals who are dynamic with strong management skills to lead a globalised work force.

Talk to your parents and find out what is their budget. There is no point going around asking about studies overseas and then find out that you can only afford to study in Malaysia.

If you choose a university with extremely low fees, then don’t be surprised at the low quality of education there. If you pay for a Kancil, you will get Kancil power. However, it doesn’t mean that you should pay so much until you are just paying for the lake only. Pay what is value for money.

Career Opportunities for Diploma in IT Graduates in Malaysia
I was confused about what to study & at which university. Talking to EduSpiral helped clear my doubts. Zen Yi, Graduated from Software Engineering at Asia Pacific University (APU)
Diploma holders can seek employment in the area of internet commerce/e-commerce; software development; database administration, system support, etc.
But I would advise students to go for the degree because there are too many diploma and degree graduates out there therefore to remain competitive in the workforce, you should get a degree.
Many students have heard that there could be no jobs for IT graduates because many are unemployed.
While this may be true, the jobs are still plenty out there. It is not that there are no jobs, it is because the graduates do not have the skills and knowledge even after going through university.
This is because they have chosen a cheaper university where they did not have experienced lecturers to equip them well. The university environment is also important because if most students speak in Mandarin at the university, then you won’t be able to improve on your communication skills in English which is important in getting a job in a Multi National Company.
What is the minimum entry requirements for a Diploma in Computer Science?
An overall credit pass in 3 subjects at SPM including credit in Mathematics and a minimum of pass in Bahasa Malaysia and Sejarah (History); or
An overall credit pass in 3 subjects at O-Levels/GCSE including credit in Mathematics;
Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) – Pass with min. 3Bs including Mathematics
Some universities may require a Pass in English
What are your career prospects with a Diploma in Computer Science?
I wanted to study mobile computing & EduSpiral shared with me about the course & helped me to choose the right university Mun Kit, Mobile Computing at Asia Pacific University (APU)
Diploma holders can seek employment in the area of internet commerce/e-commerce; software development; database administration, system support, etc.

Diploma in Computer Science vs Foundation in Computing & Information Technology
I was confused about my further studies. EduSpiral guided me in choosing the right course & getting a scholarship. He even kept in touch through all the years of my studies until now. Jeremy Lee, Software Engineering Graduate from Asia Pacific University (APU)
A Diploma course is one level higher than a Foundation programme but one level lower than a Degree programme. A Diploma is equivalent to Year 1 of the Degree. Diploma graduates may apply for a job upon completion. For the Foundation course, you have to continue on to the degree before going to work. The diploma generally is more practical while a degree course is more theoretical and academic. Students should choose top private universities in Malaysia for their diploma education so that you can gain the best knowledge and skills for a successful career.
The subjects for the Diploma course is more specific to the field of interest while the Foundation programme tend to have more general subjects. Students who are sure of what they want to study may go for the Diploma course at a top university or college in Malaysia. A lot of students assume that all Diploma in Information Technology (IT) courses at the universities are the same. They are not. It is important when choosing the Diploma in IT, to look at the subjects offered.
Some Diploma in IT are more multimedia based while others focus on programming. Some universities could have a diploma with a specialism in software engineering. You have to decide which area you want to focus on in your future career before choosing the college or university, if not, you will end up with a diploma but without the necessary knowledge and skills in IT.
This is important because during interviews for IT jobs, you will be given a test to assess your knowledge in IT. If you do not pass that test, you will not move on to be interviewed. IT is not like a business course, it is technical. If you do not have the necessary knowledge and skills, you will not go far in your career.
What is the Salary for Technology Professionals in Malaysia?
According to the JobStreet.com 2017 Salary Report, IT/computer consulting jobs (IT, science, engineering and technical) for senior managers in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya command the highest average maximum monthly salary of around RM18,000.
Meanwhile, IT/computer workers in consumer and fast-moving consumer goods industries earn the highest average minimum salary of RM14,000 within the same region.

Computer Science is about understanding computer systems and networks at a deep level. Computers and the programs they run are among the most complex products ever created by humans; designing and using them effectively presents immense challenges.
A degree in computer science can be expected to concentrate on the scientific aspects of computing, while a degree in information technology can be expected to concentrate on the business and communication applications of computing
The computer science degree is primarily focused on subjects such as software, databases, and networking. In general computer science degrees tend to focus on the mathematical and theoretical foundations of computing rather than emphasizing specific technologies.
The degree is a Bachelor of Science degree with institutions conferring degrees in the fields of information technology and related fields. This degree is awarded for completing a program of study in the field of software development, software testing, software engineering, web design, databases, programming, computer networking and computer systems.
Many employers require software developers or programmers to have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree; however, those seeking to hire for positions such as network administrators or database managers would require a Bachelors of Science in Information Technology or an equivalent degree.
Computer science offers a foundation that permits graduates to adapt to new technologies and new ideas. The work of computer scientists falls into three categories:
designing and building software;
developing effective ways to solve computing problems, such as storing information in databases, sending data over networks or providing new approaches to security problems; and
devising new and better ways of using computers and addressing particular challenges in areas such as robotics, computer vision, or digital forensics (although these specializations are not available in all computer science programs). Most computer science programs require some mathematical background.

Data science, also known as data analytics or data-driven science, is an interdisciplinary field about scientific methods, processes, and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, either structured or unstructured, similar to data mining.
Data science is a multidisciplinary blend of data inference, algorithm development, and technology in order to solve analytically complex problems. At the core is data. Millions of raw information, streaming in and stored in enterprise data warehouses. Much to learn by mining it. Advanced capabilities we can build with it. Data science is ultimately about using this data in creative ways to generate business value.
Data Science or Big Data Analytics focuses on designing and developing solutions to draw useful insights from the availability of large volumes of data, known as Big Data. Students will receive fundamental training in computer science theories and learn techniques on the processing of Big Data for analytics that can be impactful to business in Malaysia & globally.

Data is everywhere. In fact, the amount of digital data that exists is growing at a rapid rate—in fact, more than 2.7 zettabytes of data exist in today’s digital universe, and that is projected to grow to 180 zettabytes in 2025.
All this data—from your photos to the Fortune 500’s financials—has only recently begun to be analyzed to tease out insights that can help organizations improve their business. That’s why more organizations are seeking professionals who can make sense of all the data.

Data scientists combine statistics, mathematics, programming, problem-solving, capturing data in ingenious ways, the ability to look at things differently to find patterns, along with the activities of cleansing, preparing, and aligning the data.
Dealing with unstructured and structured data, Data Science is a field that encompasses anything related to data cleansing, preparation, and analysis. Put simply, Data Science is an umbrella term for techniques used when trying to extract insights and information from data.
MALAYSIA has made clear the need to leverage on big data to propel itself into a developed digital economy, with one minister declaring it as key to the nation’s aspirations. The groundwork has been laid down, with the relevant agencies and certain technology multinationals having put their heads together to develop a big data policy framework. There are also plans for the country to appoint a chief data scientist over the next few years, a move aimed at developing local capabilities in data analytics.

Data Science Job has High Demand in Malaysia
EduSpiral helped me to find an affordable and yet world top ranked computer science university. Vickey, Diploma in IT at Multimedia University (MMU)
BIG data seems to be in full throttle, developing exponential growth, looking at the amount of data being generated today. But what is big data? In a nutshell, the word literally means massive amounts of information that cannot be properly processed on a worksheet, database management system or across traditional software that people are accustomed to.
What organisations need to understand is data is no longer the sort of information that is used in the past, such as sales and financial related data, instead, real time information that needs to be constantly captured and analysed. Big data also encompasses analysing massive amounts of information an making good business out of it.
That said, the industry is reported to be lacking in data professionals as big data is a new and complex field. And due to its complexity, big data is not something existing institutions can develop overnight. That is basically why a specialised company like The Centre of Applied Data Science (CADS) is needed. It is the kind of firm that understands the nature of big data, realises the need for a holistic approach towards developing data professionals and is able to see the big picture, including the business that can be churned out of it.
Statistics show that by the year 2020, there will be about two million job openings for data professionals and that the demand for people with this knowledge and skill will outstrip supply by a ratio of two to one. It’s a global phenomena which is already in motion and Malaysia has set its sights on developing 20,000 data professionals and 2,000 data scientists by 2020.
“With a little bit of exposure and information to what big data has to offer and opportunities that lie ahead, this is really going to be one of the most exciting careers in the future, apart from artificial intelligence, robotics and the internet of things. I think a career in big data will easily be among the top 10 in the near future,” said CADS managing director Cheam Tat Inn.
CADS is Asean’s first and only one-stop platform and centre of excellence to empower the next generation of data professionals. Committed to delivering the highest standard in data science education, the centre aims to cultivate and mentor future data professionals to contribute effectively towards organisations in Malaysia and the Asean region, through accelerated and rigorous programmes and mentorship stints, unlike any other presently available in Southeast Asia.
The centre delivers programmes, many of which are through collaborations with a number of world-leading organisations such as the Harvard Business School, which targets top level executives who wish to understand big data analytics and its relevance to their business.
There is also a programme which is delivered in partnership with a company based in New York, called the Data Incubator programme. This programme is locally endorsed by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) andHuman Resources Development Fund (HRDF).
There are three main streams data professionals can branch out into – data scientists, data analysts and data engineers. While a career in data engineering would revolve around a job that is quite technical (imagine a mechanic working on a car), he or she is said to look at data a little differently compared to a data analyst, who is trained in programming skills, with a little aptitude in statistics and comes from a mathematical background.
Data scientists also are put on a higher pedestal, as this person is required to deal with higher levels of big data technicality and complexity.
“Soft skills are also very important and is also key in this profession because you need to translate complex situations into simple business language.
“A data professional must be able to take all the information, develop a mathematical formula, come up with a conclusion and present it to the top management – that is the skill required,” Cheam stressed.
To date, CADS has developed more than 750 data professionals and is looking at establishing more partnerships. Their latest is with Coursera, the largest, massive open online courses platform in the world, which offers a host of data science programmes from reputable universities around the globe, allowing one to attain professionally recognised and accredited qualifications.
For organisations to remain competitive and relevant, big data is no longer an option as it will become mainstream in the very near future. If organisations are not sensitive to big data, it will face huge impact. All it takes is one bad user experience and an organisation will be set back for days.
“The power of big data analytics can not only help in terms of competitiveness, but relevancy in the future. With all this information, you will then know how you can evolve and proactively change the company.”

Asean Data Analytics Exchange (ADAX) CEO Sharala Axryd believes data professionals such as data engineers, data analysts and data scientists are the “sexiest jobs” of the 21st century.
Sharala told The Malaysian Reserve in a recent email interview that these careers are in hot demand due to their highly valued skill sets.
“The world has positioned data professionals as jobs of the future, as the prospects of data science and analytics are endless.
“Besides a healthy remuneration package, data professionals are highly sought after and are needed across multiple industries within the next few years,” Sharala said.
She further said local data science fresh graduates can demand starting pay in the range of RM4,000-RM8,000 — making it the highest paid entrylevel job in the country today.
An experienced professional in the field can demand up to RM15,000, she said. “Data has become the new oil, as companies are constantly inundated with data that they need deciphering in order to create value for their products, services, customers and themselves.”
Sharala opined that it is important for the relevant bodies to create awareness among both youths and their parents, so that the latter can encourage their children to pursue beyond “traditional” jobs.
“I believe there will never be a shortage of data now and in the future, but there is a shortage of data professionals.
“People have no idea how huge is the demand for data scientists, data engineers and data analysts,” Sharala said.
She acknowledged many enterprises are struggling with the complexity of today’s big data and data science ecosystem.
“Though they recognise the opportunity of emerging practices, the shortage of trained data professionals remains at the top of the list of data science challenges that enterprises face.”

Top Private Universities & Colleges in Malaysia offering the Best Diploma in Information Technology (IT) or Diploma in Computer Studies Course
I was confused about what to study & at which university. Talking to EduSpiral helped clear my doubts. Zen Yi, Graduated from Software Engineering at Asia Pacific University (APU)

How to choose the right Diploma in Information Technology (IT) Course in Malaysia?
EduSpiral provided in-depth information on software engineering and convinced my parents on the importance of letting me study at the best university for IT in Malaysia. Mark Siew, Asia Pacific University
A lot of students assume that all Diploma in Information Technology (IT) courses at the universities are the same. They are not. It is important when choosing the Diploma in IT, to look at the subjects offered.
My younger brother who is a Software Engineer advised me that students should look at diplomas that have programming subjects as these are the backbone of a good iT program.
A lot of students make the mistake in choosing a cheap college because they assume that all IT diplomas are the same so there is no need to invest more. In saving a few thousand Ringgit for the few years in the diploma, they are throwing away hundreds of thousands in salary increments and promotions for the next 50 years of their work life because they did not gain the knowledge and skills that a good university would provide for them.
If you choose a lousy Kung Fu master, you will only learn his lousy skills. If you choose Ip Man, then maybe you can become the next Bruce Lee.
Assessment of the Diploma in Information Technology (IT) Course in Malaysia
A diploma course is generally more practical compared to a degree course. Coursework percentage and written examination percentage. Different learning processes can be used in the delivery of the programme, such as lectures, tutorials, computer lab work, team-based project, real life system development, presentations, independent projects supervised by supervisors from university lecturers or industry experts. It will vary from university to university on how the course is conducted.

Career Opportunities for Diploma in Information Technology (IT) Graduates in Malaysia
I found EduSpiral online and he met me and my Dad at the university to counsel us & take us around for a tour. As I didn’t come from a rich family, EduSpiral helped me to find a university that’s affordable and good. Eric Ng, Diploma in Information Technology (IT) at First City University College
Talk to the Best Education Consultant in Malaysia to Help you Make the Right Choice in your Studies
Lonnie Sik, Founder of EduSpiral, has more than 15 years of experience counseling thousands of students on how to choose the right course & university
in finding out who you are and what you are good at. An experienced Education Advisor would be invaluable in assisting you to choose the right course in Malaysia or Singapore.
Students in Malaysia need to talk to the right education counselors so that you get the right information to help you in making this life-changing decision.
Ask the right Education Counselors in Malaysia to help you. Would you ask a Doctor on how to repair your car? Or would you ask a mechanic for medical advise? Although this sounds ridiculous, but many students do listen to advise from young and inexperienced counselors from universities, colleges or agents’ offices. Talking to an experienced education advisor in Malaysia would help you to navigate through this confusing time of choosing the best course that fits you.
Experienced education counselors are able to analyse your interests, personality and exam results to help you make a list of possible courses for consideration. EduSpiral Consultant Services staff have more than 15 years experience in counseling students. Having worked in the private education industry, we have in-depth knowledge of each private university and college in what they are good at.
EduSpiral Consultant Services has worked with our partner universities and colleges for many years while the counselors at the private universities or agents’ offices change every few years therefore they would not have the in-depth knowledge of the courses and the university that they are working at.
How to Choose the Best Private University to Study Diploma in Information Technology (IT) in Malaysia
EduSpiral advised me on Facebook and then met me and my friends at APU to take us around for a tour. Edward, Software Engineering at Asia Pacific University
The best private universities and colleges in Malaysia have excellent facilities, years of experience running the programme, strong student support services, internships and experienced lecturers.
They are also accredited by MQA and approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Education. Accreditation by the various professional bodies such as the Board of Engineers Malaysia, Pharmacy Board, Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia, Nursing Board, Malaysian Medical Council, etc also indicates the standard achieved.
The best private university in Malaysia will focus on quality, have award winners for the particular courses, years of experience offering the particular course, highly experienced lecturers, a good study environment (not a party university), internships, good mix of international & local students, extra-curricular activities and good facilities. The SETARA ranking is a guide for students to assess the quality of a private university in Malaysia.
Talk to the lecturers and find out from the counselors there about the courses and check if the courses have been accredited by MQA and other external bodies like the Pharmacy Board, Nursing Board, Malaysian Medical Council, Board of Engineers Malaysia , Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia or Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia.
The environment should be one where students speak mostly in English so that you can improve your English and communication skills. If you are weak in English and choose a cheap university where the students speak mainly in Mandarin, it will be difficult for you to improve your English.
Star newspaper has reported that graduates with good English earn 25% higher salary and get faster promotion. The Ministry of Education reported that there were more than 70,000 public university jobless graduates and one of the main reasons was poor command of the English language.
Would you rather suffer for 4 years and get a high salary for 60 years of your work life or an easy 4 years and low salary for 60 years? The decisions that you make now, can change your life forever. Remember the best university doesn’t mean it is the best university for you. The best university is one that fits your career goals, your personality and can push you to a higher level of success.

Information technology (IT) is the application of computers to store, study, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data, or information, often in the context of a business or other enterprise. IT is considered a subset of information and communications technology (ICT).
IT includes several layers of physical equipment (hardware), virtualization and management or automation tools, operating systems and applications (software) used to perform essential functions. User devices, peripherals and software, such as laptops, smartphones or even recording equipment, can be included in the IT domain. IT can also refer to the architectures, methodologies and regulations governing the use and storage of data
Information Technology (IT) involves many things. Take, for instance, an IT department in a company in Malaysia where there are many people with many jobs and a variety of responsibilities. These responsibilities range from keeping systems and data secure to keeping networks up and running. There are people who input data, people who manage databases and people who do programming.
Information Technology (IT) also includes the management of data, whether it is in the form of text, voice, image, audio or some other form. It can also involve things related to the Internet. This gives IT a whole new meaning, since the Internet is its own realm. Information Technology (IT) involves the transfer of data, so it makes sense that the Internet would be a part of IT. IT has become a part of our everyday lives and continues to proliferate into new realms.
Typically, Information Technology (IT) is used in the context of enterprise operations as opposed to personal or entertainment technologies. The commercial use of IT encompasses both computer technology and telephony.
There are many types of IT courses that you can choose or specialise in. You must take the time to talk to the right people so that you understand which one fits you. Students should also choose the best university for computing or IT to study at so that you can gain the necessary knowledge and skills. According to Pikom, there are many jobs out there for IT graduates and there are also many jobless IT graduates. The reason for this is that there is a mismatch of the courses with the skill needed. In addition, the training that the students received was not up to the standard needed in the industry.

According to the Robert Walters Salary Report 2018, the Information and Technology sector is also expected to grow the fastest next year in a candidate-driven market with salary increments ranging between 20 to 30 per cent. Robert Walters, a specialist professional recruitment consultancy company shares that they see a high demand in IT jobs spanning across the fintech, banking, as well as the healthcare sector such as data analysts, software engineers and cyber security. Hiring activity will remain active in 2018, driven mostly by continuous growth of e-commerce, digitalisation, fintech, shared services and better organisational optimisation.
The IT sector saw a spike in demand for software developers skilled in programming languages in 2017 as organisations looked to fill hybrid positions with top candidates who were adept in more than one coding language. This trend is set to continue as we see more need such as in the implementation of the Digital Free Trade Zone and businesses moving towards digitalisation. Candidates with high potential or niche skills are also expected to enjoy increments of between 25 per cent to 30 per cent when they move jobs, although a raise of 15-20 per cent is common business practice.
Theinformation technology (IT) industry is expected to face a shortage of between 7,000 and 15,000 professionals in the next two years, as Malaysia rides the wave of the growing digital economy. Malaysian Digital Economy Corp (MDEC) CEO Datuk Yasmin Mahmood said currently there are more than 3,000 companies registered under the Multimedia Super Corridor and the industry is currently in need of specialised workers in various IT fields.
“We project that by 2025, the IT industry will require one million specialised working professionals as the industry is experiencing a rampant growth,” she said.
To keep up with the growth, many companies have to resort to foreign talents that are capable of moving in tandem with the current trend and needs in the IT industry. Malaysian Employers Federation ED Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan said many IT companies are forced to seek foreign expertise, especially for the high-end sectors such as the big data analytics and artificial intelligence.
“The country still could not fulfil the requirement set by IT companies, especially when everyone is moving towards the Industry 4.0 and adopting technology such as big data analytics.
MORE experts are needed to fill up the positions in the data-driven industry, backed by the growing demand from local companies, said Malaysia Digital Economy Corp Sdn Bhd (MDEC).
MDEC head of strategic partnership Somasundaram Nagappan said there are currently 6,000 working professionals in big data analytics sector through MDEC’s programmes. Malaysia Digital Economy Corp Sdn Bhd (MDEC) targets to have 20,000 data science professionals by 2020.
The emergence of technology and automation under the fourth industrial wave (Industry 4.0) has raised fears that some people might lose their jobs in Malaysia, especially in the manufacturing sector. There have been various reports stating how companies need to adopt the big data movement to remain relevant, or risk losing out in the evolving market. Directly, more companies have begun to engage and hire data professionals to tap into the big data potential, creating a big pool of demand for local data science fresh graduates.
A report from the recent Digital Workforce of The Future by LinkedIn, which revealed that a combination of skills encompassing Big Data, data analytics and web development registered a 21% growth in demand. In Malaysia, the top five in-demand digital skills are big data, software and user testing, mobile development, Cloud computing and software engineering management.
Choose to Study Information Technology (IT) because of Increase in Salary for Professionals in Malaysia
EduSpiral took me & my friends to tour a few universities to help us make the right choice. He then met me & my father for further counseling & to assist in registering. Horng Yarng, Diploma in ICT at Asia Pacific University
According to the recent Robert Walters Global Salary Survey 2017, the broad sectors which may offer the highest salary packages in Malaysia are information technology, financial services and shared services. The technology sector in Malaysia is set to see the highest demand in terms of jobs and salary hikes.
Since 2013, the technology sector has seen salary hikes and this trend is expected to continue over the next couple of years. Meanwhile, Robert Walters Malaysia managing director Sally Raj says software developers and cyber security experts can expect significant salary raises of up to 25% when moving jobs in 2017, as cyber security professionals will be highly sought after across a number of industries, especially in the banking sector.
Commenting on the technology sector, Raj says the technology sector, especially for niche positions, may see at least a 30% salary rise this year compared with 27% last year. For example, in senior positions, a chief technology officer can expect an annual salary of between RM360,000 and RM600,000 this year from RM350,000 and RM540,000 in 2016.
A program manager may bring in an annual salary of between RM240,000 and RM360,000 from RM216,000 and RM336,000 last year. A solution architect, however, could see an annual salary hike of up to RM180,000-RM324,000 from RM120,000-RM192,000.
Hays regional director for Malaysia Tom Osborne concurs that the technology sector will likely see the highest jump in salary this year. “The key sectors in Malaysia that will see pay hikes include information technology. Areas in IT where growth will occur include IT infrastructure systems administration and management positions.
For instance, a network engineer in the systems administration side could rake in an annual salary of between RM96,000 and RM144,000 this year compared to between RM72,000 and RM120,000 last year.
“Organisations in Malaysia are reinventing themselves for the digital world that has seen many invest in upgrading their IT infrastructure. This has created demand for talent who are well versed in this area and as a consequence, wages have increased.
“Technology is going to be at the forefront over the next few years, as businesses like financial services (banking and insurance), fast-moving consumer goods companies and retailers gear up to adopt technology. Furthermore, organisations are now utilising digital channels to grow their businesses.”
With the advent of financial technology (fintech), Raj foresees further growth in technology usage in the financial services sector, partly thanks to the recent regulatory “sandbox” framework for fintech. The sandbox refers to a safe space where businesses can test innovative products, services, business models and delivery mechanisms.
As digital, mobile and e-commerce-related companies expand their businesses, she says there will be an increase in the number of employers recruiting mobile engineers and software developers in 2017.
According to Human Resources Online, prospects are bright as employers are driven by Malaysia’s blend of price point and quality. There is an uptake in the creation of centres of excellence, resulting in increased demand for specialist talent further up the value chain.
Malaysia is currently less competitive on cost point alone compared to other typical offshore centres, such as Chennai and Manila. However, if you factor in the quality, seniority and specialist nature of IT professional that can be hired here, Malaysia is now moving towards being a cost-effective alternative to Singapore and Hong Kong, a move away from the typical offshore BPO model.
Moving into Q1 2017, significant growth is expected across the following sectors:
Infrastructure services such as networks, platforms and specialist areas such as cloud and virtualisation; Salaries of IT directors with more than 10 years of experience pegged at RM250k-360k per annum;
ERP, EAI and other specialist off-the-peg solutions from large vendors such as SAP, Oracle and Salesforce;
Solutions architect for application development can take home in the range of RM180k-250k per month.
Business transformation, an increasingly dominant area of IT, leading to demand for professionals in project management, program management, PMO and change management.

Best Guide in Choose a University in Malaysia for Computer Science Degree Course
EduSpiral picked us up from KL Sentral & brought us to the university for counseling and to tour the campus. In addition, he helped us in our application to the university. Seng Foong & Samson, Software Engineering at Asia Pacific University (APU)
If you’re among the lucky who can factor more than cost and proximity into where you decide to go, studying in a private university in Malaysia is a ticket to an adventure beyond the boundaries of what you’ve experienced so far. It’s a passport to the far side of what you already know. It’s a chance to be challenged, not coddled. To be provoked, not pacified.
Does brand matter? To a point. There are indeed future employers in Malaysia who see certain degrees as seals of approval, as pre-screening of a sort. However, obtaining a degree from a famous private university will only take you so far.
Some private universities have spent millions of Ringgit throughout the years telling you that they are the best. You should objectively look at the information carefully to assess which university in Malaysia is best for you. If you do not have the necessary knowledge and skills, you won’t get far in your career.
We must be careful when choosing a private university in Malaysia to study computer science as many students listen to advise from friends and relatives who are not knowledgeable offering information not supported by facts and evidence. Choosing a private university should be done carefully and objectively, not based on the number of glitzy advertisements you have heard or seen about that university.
Talking to counselors from the private universities is a common practice to obtain the necessary information to help you to decide. You should evaluate the information provided to see if what they say is true and supported by facts and evidence. There are also many agents in Malaysia offering their services where most of the staff are young and inexperienced. They would not have the skills to guide you on this most important decision in your life.
How many of a college’s or university’s students are coming from other countries? Favour private universities with higher percentages of foreigners, because as much of your education will happen outside as inside any lecture theatre, and globalisation is here and real. The dexterity with which you can navigate other cultures — your awareness of, and openness to, them — could be more valuable than any knowledge gleaned from a book.
Choosing a university that excels in your field of study may provide you with access to more specialised opportunities, including state-of-the-art computer labs and expensive software for learning. If your university excels in research in your field, it’s also likely that its research will filter through to your course, that you will be taught by prominent lecturers, and that there will be opportunities for you to undertake research.
Choosing the best university for your studies in Malaysia is important as it will help to shape your mind, character and help you to develop the necessary skills for a successful career. Therefore, not all private universities & colleges in Malaysia are the same. You should not choose a university because it is the cheapest, easiest and nearest. It should be based on which university that best fits your needs.
Many students in Malaysia also make the common mistake in choosing a university because their friends are going there. I even had one student tell me that his choice of university depends on where his girlfriend is going! This is one of the most important decisions that may change your life forever hence it should not be taken lightly.
Computer Science is the study of computer systems including algorithmic processes and the principles involved in the design of hardware and software.
I was confused about what to study & at which university. Talking to EduSpiral helped clear my doubts. Zen Yi, Graduated from Software Engineering at Asia Pacific University (APU)
Computer scientists are primarily concerned with the design of algorithms, languages, hardware architecture, systems software, applications software and tools. Applications range from simple game playing to the control of space vehicles, power plants and factories, from banking machines to intelligent fault and medical diagnosis. Computer professionals, in short, are concerned with the creation of computer and information systems for the benefit of society.
Additionally, computer science covers a wide area, from its theoretical and algorithmic foundations to cutting-edge developments in robotics, computer vision, intelligent systems, bioinformatics, and other exciting areas. We can think of the work of computer scientists as falling into three categories.
They design and implement software. Computer scientists take on challenging programming jobs. They also supervise other programmers, keeping them aware of new approaches.
They devise new ways to use computers. Progress in the CS areas of networking, database, and
human-computer-interface enabled the development of the World Wide Web. Now CS researchers are working with scientists from other fields to make robots become practical and intelligent aides, to use databases to create new knowledge, and to use computers to help decipher the secrets of our DNA.
They develop effective ways to solve computing problems. For example, computer scientists develop
the best possible ways to store information in databases, send data over networks, and display complex images. Their theoretical background allows them to determine the best performance possible, and their study of algorithms helps them to develop new approaches that provide better performance.

Location of the university or college. Is it in the city, suburbs or country side? You should also consider the ambience of your surroundings when choosing a university. If you can’t live without nightlife, think city! If you’re into the great outdoors, you might want to go rural. Some students prefer a city life while other students prefer a quieter university environment away from the city. On the other hand, if you’re used to shopping malls and cinemas and choose a university in a rural area, you might get bored.
Size of the university.
Transportation. Is the university accessible to you? What are the public transportation available? If you drive, is there ample parking?
Campus resources (labs, library or resource centre, wifi, computer access, sports facilities, etc.)

What is the student culture at the university? (English-speaking environment, ambitious, serious about studies, lifestyle or party university, etc) The language spoken mostly at the college by the students may also matter if you don’t know Mandarin or BM or English. If most of the students speak Mandarin at that university then it will not help you to improve your English. Having a good command of the English language helps you to get good jobs and promotions.
Size of the university or college in Malaysia. Some students prefer a large campus with sports facilities and other resources while other students like small colleges with family-like environment. A small college may offer individualised attention, as well as a more intimate and personalised experience. for your studies You might even want to think about how far you want to walk to get from one class to another in a large university campus. Even those little details may affect your decision.
Make up of the student body (diversity, international students, gender, etc.) Universities with a good proportion of international students will help you to improve your English language skills since you would need to communicate with them in English. In addition, you will learn about their culture, behaviour and discover new ideas. These skills will be useful to you when you work overseas or in a multi-national company.
What are the Extra-curricular activities available? (Student organisations, clubs, sports, etc.)
Is the university or college campus a safe area? Safety within the campus and outside.

Software Engineering is an Engineering profession concerned with the processes, methods, and tools for the design and development of high quality, reliable software systems. This involves the study and application of software specification, design, implementation, testing, and documentation of software. Target systems may range from simple software applications to mission-critical real-time systems.
Software Engineering includes the design and implementation of specific, reliable, efficient and secure software systems for a multitude of purposes. Of course, you also have to be able to write or code software if you are going to be able to build the systems around it. ‘Software’ are the programs that we all use on our computers – but Software Engineering goes so much deeper than that. Software engineers usually design a program to fulfil a certain need or solve a problem. Every time you use your email, or an app on your smartphone or a computer accounting system you are using software.
Software Engineering is concerned with the design and implementation of reliable and secure software systems, which have the functionality required for the intended purpose. Software Engineering is also sometimes referred to as “software programming”. Software Engineering is a booming industry with no shortage of opportunities to create unique and life changing programs.
I had wanted to go to another university near my house for IT after my A-Levels. I was planning to study in IPTA after STPM but then my parents talked to EduSpiral. They realised the importance of studying at a top award winning university for computing. Mark Siew, Software Engineering at Asia Pacific University
Even companies that have been associated largely with hardware in the past estimate that 80-90% of their engineers are involved in software development. As a consequence of this rapid expansion there is a serious worldwide shortage of software engineers who are able to deal with the complexity of developing high-quality software systems. The software industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world with work opportunities in many areas including, but not limited to, telecommunications, defence, electronics and, of course, software development and computing. With a Software Engineering degree, you will be qualified to design, program and create software for literally anything you can think of.
Given the ubiquitous nature of software in modern society, software engineers can find employment opportunities in many areas. These will include, but will not be limited to, the computing, software, electronics, telecommunications, security and defence industries.
Organisations in Malaysia are already reinventing themselves to embrace digitisation, so it comes as no surprise that this field is observing – now and in the future – a steady and strong demand. Software development, data centres, big data analytics and cloud computing are rapidly developing areas. Digital or IT-related jobs, including content creators, data scientists and IT professionals will continue to stay in demand for the next decade.
According to Hays, the increasing threat of cyber security has created huge demand for security experts

who can safeguard the IT systems of organisations against malicious cyber-attacks. And, with a growing number of large-scale cyberattacks including the global WannaCry ransomware which infected more than 300,000 computers in 150 countries this year, it’s no surprise that cybersecurity experts are high in demand.
The Pikom Job Market Outlook in Malaysia 2017 report found that professionals in the industries mentioned were paid an average of RM8,952 per month, last year. Pikom (The National ICT Association of Malaysia) is targeting a 6.7% growth for the average monthly salary of IT professionals this year, bringing it to RM9,056, which is more than double the amount in 2007. It is heartening to note that looking at a 10-year period, the ICT industry average monthly salary has doubled since 2007.
In 2014, employees who remained in-role received salary increases between 5-10%, while those who moved organisations received between 15-25%. We expect this trend to continue in 2015 – potentially rising further for e-commerce professionals who will be in demand as organisations set-up IT hubs in Malaysia.

Studying the Best Software Engineering Course in Malaysia

Software Engineering is the practice of designing and implementing large, reliable, efficient and economical software by applying the principles and practices of engineering.
Software Engineering is the field of studying, devising and building a practical solution to a problem. The objective of a software engineer is to understand a problem within a computer and create software that eases the problem. This could include either manipulating existing software or creating a new one from scratch. Software is required to make computer function. This job is mostly a team effort. Engineers group together with programmers in order to build a software that works with the system at hand.
Many subjects that are learned in Software Engineering is similar to the ones learned in Computer Science, but it also includes additional subjects such as requirements engineering, software architecture, software testing, and software deployment. Other areas that play an importance in this field include leadership, communication, time management, people management, etc. The engineers must plan out the best way to tackle the situation at hand and create a step by step process on how to accomplish this task. They may require to code in certain time, but most of the coding is done by programmers. A software engineer requires a background in software creation, programming languages, mathematics and computer hardware.
Software engineers when developing software go through a software process. This software process model
EduSpiral chatted with me on Facebook & helped me with my application & accommodation. Jian Yi, Business Computing at Asia Pacific University
is an abstraction of software process and is also known as process paradigms. The first published model for the software process is known as the Waterfall model. When a software is being made it must first be conceptualized on the paper, following which the program is designed and then asked to be written.
The software then goes through vigorous testing and a soft release before it is made public. According to Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge, a widely accepted standard; software engineering can be divided into ten sub-disciplines: Software requirements, software design, software construction, software testing, software maintenance, software configuration management, software engineering management, software engineering process and software quality.
Software engineers learn much more about creating high-quality software in a systematic, controlled, and efficient manner. Software engineers are trained in all aspects of the software life cycle, from specification through analysis and design, to testing maintenance and evaluation of the product. They are concerned with safety and reliability of the product as well as cost and schedule of the development process.

I didn’t want to leave Penang for my studies but EduSpiral provided detailed information to help me make my decision. Vincent Lim, Software Engineering, Asia Pacific University
Software Engineering has its roots in the theory and mathematics of computer science. While its study has a lot in common with computer science, software engineers learn much more about creating high-quality software in a systematic, controlled, and efficient manner.
Software engineers are trained in all aspects of the software life cycle, from specification through analysis and design, to testing maintenance and evaluation of the product. They are concerned with safety and reliability of the product as well as cost and schedule of the development process.
Software engineering is the discipline of developing and maintaining software systems that behave
reliably and efficiently, are affordable to develop and maintain, and satisfy all the requirements that
customers have defined for them. More recently, it has evolved in response to factors such as the growing impact of large and expensive software systems in a wide range of situations and the increased importance of software in safety-critical applications.
Software engineering is different in character from other engineering disciplines due to both the
intangible nature of software and the discontinuous nature of software operation. It seeks to integrate the
principles of mathematics and computer science with the engineering practices developed for tangible,
physical artifacts. Prospective students in Malaysia can expect to see software engineering presented in two contexts.
EduSpiral picked me up from KL Sentral to tour the campus & provided counseling to help me make the right choice. Qi Leem, Computing at Asia Pacific University
Degree programs in computer science offer one or more software engineering courses as elements of
the Computer Science curriculum. Some offer a multi-course concentration in software engineering within Computer Science.
A number of institutions offer a software engineering degree program.
Degree programs in computer science and in software engineering have many subjects in common. Software engineering students learn more about software reliability and maintenance and focus more on
techniques for developing and maintaining software that is correct from its inception.
While Computer Science students are likely to have heard of the importance of such techniques, the engineering knowledge and experience provided in Software Engineering programs go beyond what Computer Science programs can provide.
The importance of this fact is so great that one of the recommendations of the Software Engineering report is that, during their program of study, students of Software Engineering should participate in the development of software to be used in earnest by others. Software Engineering students learn how to assess customer needs and develop usable software that meets those needs. Knowing how to provide genuinely useful and usable software is of paramount importance.
In the workplace, the term software engineer is a job label. There is no standard definition for this term
when used in a job description. Its meaning varies widely among employers. It can be a title equivalent to
computer programmer or a title for someone who manages a large, complex, and/or safety-critical
software project. The layman must be mindful not confuse the discipline of software engineering with the
ambiguous use of the term software engineer as used in employment advertisements and job titles.
