techniques for developing and maintaining software that is correct from the beginning. Software engineers assess customer needs and develop usable software that meets those needs. Knowing how to provide genuinely useful and usable software is of utmost importance. You will be exposed to the recent evolution of software’s significant impact on large software systems.
The software engineering profession seeks to integrate the principles of mathematics and computer science with engineering practices developed for tangible, physical items.
As a graduate of Asia Pacific University’s software engineering programme, you will be capable of gathering specifications of the software to be developed or modified by meeting with your clients. You will able to specify, develop, and maintain software systems that behave reliably and efficiently, are affordable to develop and maintain, and satisfy all the requirements that customers have defined for them.
Software Engineering is the study and application of engineering to the design, development, and maintenance of software. It is the application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software. Software Engineers develop procedures and systematic applications that are used on electronic machines.

detailed knowledge in a step-by-step mode that can be understood by students who are just after SPM. Students after SPM should choose the best university in Malaysia versus the cheapest university to study their software engineering degree. And not all universities nor all software engineering degree programmes are the same.
Studying at the best university in Malaysia would ensure that students obtain the necessary skills and knowledge that would help them to succeed in the fast changing computing field and competitive work environment.
What do you do as a Software Engineer in Malaysia?
Software engineers are involved in the design and development of a variety of software,

including computer games, word processing and business applications, operating systems and network distribution, and compilers, which convert programs to machine language for execution on a computer.
They also install, configure and maintain software systems used by commercial or manufacturing companies. They can work with the company to coordinate each department’s needs such as ordering, billing, inventory, payroll, and records.
Software Engineers could also help set up the company’s intranets or networks that link computers within the company. This helps the communication between the departments. To develop tailor-made software systems,
Software Engineers will begin by meeting up with the client to gather information on what they would like for the software to achieve. They need to gain a thorough understanding of the client’s business and information needs, and analyse the current system.
After that, they will then analyse the information and then begin to design, develop and test the software in real situations.
Software Engineers will create detailed sets of instructions, called algorithms. The algorithms tell the

computer what to do. They also are used to convert instructions into a computer language. This process is called programming or coding. Software Engineers must be experts in operating systems and middleware to ensure that the underlying systems will work properly.
Software Engineers can also develop “off-the-shelf” or “ready-made’ software packages that can be integrated into an existing operating system. The ability to integrate the software requires a thorough knowledge of the software packages and programming languages.
They will need to provide the appropriate interfaces to be used to integrate them. Software Engineers in Malaysia works with in a team to design new hardware, software, and systems. The team may consist of engineering, marketing, manufacturing, and design people, who work together to release a product.
What do you need to know as a Software Engineer in Malaysia?
I met EduSpiral at the Education Fair and he helped me to filter all the information from the universities and choose the best university that fit me.” Vincent Hoy, Scholarship student at Asia Pacific University
Software Engineers need to use different programming languages, depending on the purpose of the program.
The programming languages most often used are C, C++, and Java, with Fortran and COBOL used less commonly. Other programming languages that are in high demand are HTML, XHTML, XML, PHP, Visual Basic.
With the growth of smart phones comes with it the demand for the programming languages related to it such as the programming language, Objective C, and its software development tool (XCode) for the iOS market.
Software Engineers will also need to have a strong foundation in computer science, logic and mathematics.
What subjects do I need to be good at in order to study Software Engineering in Malaysia?
MATHS! If you want to study Software Engineering, you will need to be good in Mathematics. You should have an “A” in SPM for Additional Maths or at least a strong credit. Students always make the mistake of choosing to study Software Engineering because they like to play with computers. If you don’t have a strong foundation in Maths, you should choose some other course.

Talk to the Best Education Consultant in Malaysia to Help you Make the Right Choice in your Studies
Lonnie Sik, Founder of EduSpiral Consultant Services, has more than 20 years in counseling students on how to choose the right course and university in Malaysia
Choosing a course to study after SPMis not a science, it is a process in finding out who you are and what you are good at. An experienced Education Advisor would be invaluable in assisting you to choose the right course in Malaysia or Singapore.
Students in Malaysia need to talk to the right education counselors so that you get the right information to help you in making this life-changing decision.
Ask the right Education Counselors in Malaysia to help you. Would you ask a Doctor on how to repair your car? Or would you ask a mechanic for medical advise? Although this sounds ridiculous, but many students do listen to advise from young and inexperienced counselors from universities, colleges or agents’ offices. Talking to an experienced education advisor in Malaysia would help you to navigate through this confusing time of choosing the best course that fits you.
Experienced education counselors are able to analyse your interests, personality and exam
EduSpiral took these students separately to tour the campus and provided course counseling to help them make the right choice. Kian Yong (Mechanical Engineering), Yammie (Business), & Kenneth Pang (Architecture) at UCSI University’s Orientation
results to help you make a list of possible courses for consideration. EduSpiral Consultant Services staff have more than 15 years experience in counseling students. Having worked in the private education industry, we have in-depth knowledge of each private university and college in what they are good at.
EduSpiral Consultant Services has worked with our partner universities and colleges for many years while the counselors at the private universities or agents’ offices change every few years therefore they would not have the in-depth knowledge of the courses and the university that they are working at.

Help! I don’t know what course to choose to study at university- what do I do?
It is important to choose the right course to study – you don’t want to waste your time and money on a
EduSpiral Consultant Services staff have more than 15 years experience in counseling students
course you don’t want to do (or end up dropping out of). To help you decide which course is right for you, make a list of courses that are of interest to you.
Is it a subject you have already studied? For example, maybe you loved the English subject and you read novels for pleasure in your own time. You can consider Teaching English as a Second Language, journalism or Mass Communication. In addition, you don’t have to do a journalism degree to become a journalist – many degrees are considered!
Maybe you’ve always been interested in computers and the internet at home, and enjoyed maths at school, so are considering a degree in computer science, a course subject you probably won’t have studied before. Experienced education counselors are able to analyse your interests, personality and exam results to help you make a list of possible courses for consideration.
Looking at your results in SPM could help you to decide which course you would be good at. If you are good in Maths & Physics then you can consider Engineering courses. Having good results in Chemistry, Biology & Maths, you can think of a career in Food Science, Pharmacy or Medicine. Talking to an experienced education advisor would help you to navigate through this confusing time of choosing the best course that fits you.
Many students after SPM make the mistake of just listening to advise without verifying whether
My friend introduced me to EduSpiral because for a long time after SPM I still did not know what and where to study. EduSpiral took time to explain the courses to me and even took me around the university for a tour. Yammie Chau, Diploma in Business at UCSI University
the information given is true or not. In addition, just because you have heard or seen a lot of advertisements by a particular university, doesn’t mean that it is the best in that course.
Many of the course counselors at the universities are paid by the universities to get you to register there, so their main motivation is to get you to register, not to help you make the right choice.
You should also ask yourself if you would still be interested in that subject for a further three or four years – enough to motivate yourself to work and research independently? Remember, you are going to work in this career for the next 50 years after graduation, therefore, you should have a high interest in the course.
The course that you choose should also have a job demand for you after you graduate. Choosing a course that you are passionate about without job demand and you may end up being jobless. Look for statistics and research to support whether there is a job demand for your future career in Malaysia or Singapore. Here at EduSpiral Consultant Services, we do our research on the job demand for the careers in Malaysia, Salary Reports, and universities so that we can advise our students based on facts and evidence.
Now why would you want to talk to EduSpiral Consultant Services when you can contact the private universities directly? Well, EduSpiral Consultant Services staff have more than 15 years experience in counseling students. Having worked in the private education industry, we have in-depth knowledge of each private university and college in what they are good at.
We have worked with our partner universities and colleges for many years while the counselors at the private universities or agents’ offices change every few years therefore they would not have the in-depth knowledge of the courses and the university that they are working at.
What am I good at? What am I not good at?
“I attended EduSpiral’s Education Fair at KInta Riverfront after my SPM exam in December and obtained great information there. Although Asia Pacific University is famous for IT but I found out that they have a solid accounting programme and I can get a UK degree. I got a scholarship as well from APU.” Julian Hum, from SMK St. Michael Institution, Ipoh studying Business at Asia Pacific University.
An undergraduate degree course in Malaysia lasts three to five years – that’s a long time to spend studying something which you don’t enjoy, especially at a more intense level! First of all ask yourself what you have enjoyed studying at secondary school in Malaysia.
Your SPM results will show what you are actually good at. Having good results in Maths, you can consider Actuarial Science, Accounting, Computing or Finance courses. Having narrowed down to these courses, you can go for the Foundation in Arts for 1 year before really choosing which one to study for your degree.
Alternatively you can also think about subjects you definitely don’t want to study at university level and which you can’t wait to say goodbye to. Crossing these off will make your list of options smaller and less overwhelming.
Your parents and friends would also be able to give you an idea of what you are good at. Looking at your hobbies and interests would help to narrow down the list. Your hobby in drawing could open the possibility of choosing design courses.
What qualifications do I have already?
You may already have an idea of the area you want to study and find a career in, which will have dictated what subjects you’re already studying at school. However it’s good to look at the qualifications and grades you have (or are predicted to have) to see what you are already eligible to study. Some students want to study medicine but in their SPM results, they only managed to get 5Cs. To study in medicine, one needs to have at least 5Bs including the science subjects. Students need to be realistic in choosing their course of study by looking at their actual results.
If your actual results do not meet the entry requirements for your particular course of interest, then you may need to consider other options or to resit the SPM exam to get the necessary results.
What are my interests?
“I went for EduSpiral’s Change Your Life Education Fair at Kinta Riverfront in Ipoh after my SPM exams. Even after the fair I still had questions and he met me and my mother at Old Town to explain further. We decided to register at KDU because through much discussion with EduSpiral we found that it is the best university that fit my needs.” Gary Ng (Right), Accounting at KDU University College with Jun Sern, Mass Comm
If you can’t think of an academic subject which you’re especially strong at or one which you would want to pursue at university-level, think about your non-academic interests outside of school. It’s likely that you’re much more passionate about these but you’ve never even thought you could study a course related to these (or pursue a career in this area).
Your hobbies, interests and which clubs & societies that you have joined in secondary school would give you some idea of what you are good at. These, together with your actual results would contribute to your decision-making process in choosing the right course of study.
New courses are being created all the time to prepare and develop talent for growing industries, such as animation or computer game design. Projects, events and knowledge related to these interests can all contribute to show that you’re passionate about this area and eligible to study on a course which can prepare you for a related career.
In other cases there may be several routes to your dream career, some of which may allow you to study something different before transferring or. Talk to those who are already working in this area to see how they got to where they are now, including what they studied (or even what they wish they had studied).
What do I want to do for my career in Malaysia or Singapore?
You may have a clear idea of what you want to do for a career which makes choosing a course to study
After I finished my SPM, I felt confused about my further study. Eduspiral, was so patient to answer all my questions and took us around for a campus tour. Hui Ying, Diploma in Accounting at Asia Pacific University
easier, particularly if you want to become a doctor or lawyer. You can search our articles section to see if we’ve already written about your dream graduate career and how you can achieve this.
When making a decision about your career, it is important to take into consideration the average salary. Starting salaries in Malaysia is about RM2800 to RM3000 for most careers while starting salaries in Singapore is about SGD2714. Although starting salaries is generally the same level for everyone, what you do in the following years of your job will determine how much higher you would get.
Therefore, it is also important to choose the right university that would equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to move up in your career. Many students make the mistake of choosing the cheapest university for their studies and then later realise that they cannot get the promotion or salary increment because they did not get the skills needed. English is one of these skills that most students do not take seriously about its importance for promotion and salary increments in future jobs.
Think about it, if you are unable to write a report or email in proper English or do a presentation smoothly, how would you be able to become a manager or CEO eventually?
Best Education Pathway After SPM in Malaysia
I was confused about what to study and talking to EduSpiral helped me a lot. Coming from Sarawak made it difficult for me to know which university was best in Malaysia & EduSpiral provided good insights. Eric Lu, Business at KDU University College
Students after SPM in Malaysia who are not sure what to study at degree level can go for the Pre-University course in Malaysia like A-Levels, AUSMAT or Foundation and then proceed on to the degree in Malaysia or Singapore.
Students who choose to study at top private colleges in Singapore can complete the degree in less than 3 years after their SPM. Some private universities in Malaysia cost more than RM100,000 to study at and they are just famous in Malaysia so why not pay the same amount to study in Singapore and complete the degree faster and obtain a UK or Australian degree awarded by top universities?
Choosing the right Pre-University course in Malaysia that fits you would mean that you have to ask yourself which methods of assessment best suit you? Exams, coursework, practicals, group projects and presentations could all be in the mix in differing quantities. Every Pre-University course will include a % breakdown of assessment. You need to understand yourself and capabilities in order to decide which Pre-University course would best suit you.
Students in Malaysia who are sure of what they want to study after SPM can enter the Diploma course
After starting class at college, I was still confused if the course suited me. I took a bus from Seremban to meet up with EduSpiral for counseling. I have a clearer picture of what to do now. Kuang Joe, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at HELP College of Arts & Technology
first. The Diploma pathway in Malaysia for students after SPM is 2 or 2.5 years and then enter into Year 2 of the Degree programme.
Completing a degree at top private colleges in Singapore is the fastest pathway after SPM. Students will take 7 to 12 months to complete a Diploma and then enter into the Degree programme for another 2 years.
There are many types of diploma and Pre-University courses in Malaysia & Singapore as well as hundreds of undergraduate majors to choose from. But knowing the right one for you is the most difficult decision. If you read this guide from start to finish, you’ll know the best courses in Malaysia that would suit you.
If you are not sure what to study, do ask a trained counselor and always make decisions based on evidence and facts. The decisions that you make now, can change your life forever.

How to Choose the Right Course to Study in Malaysia or Singapore after SPM?
I was confused what to study & which university. My cousin introduced me to EduSpiral who helped me to make the right choice. Ye Lun, Actuarial Science at Asia Pacific University
Look at your results – what are your best & worst subjects, and which subjects are your favourite?
What are your interests & hobbies?
What is your passion?
Job demand for the career of choice. There is no point in choosing a course out of passion and then graduate to find out that you cannot get a job in that field.
Salary of the career of choice
Discuss the budget for your studies with your parents. There is no point in choosing a course like Pharmacy or Medicine, if you cannot afford it.
Choosing the Best Course to Study after SPM
After I finished my SPM, I felt confused about my further study. Because of Eduspiral, I am able to pursue my studies at Asia Pacific University. Eduspiral, was so patient to answer all my questions and even brought me to visit the university when I went to KL alone. Jeremy Lee, APU scholarship student
Choosing the right course to study in Malaysia or Singapore after high school is one of the most important decisions you can make in your life. This can be a confusing and difficult time if you are unprepared.
With the wide variety of courses available to a student, the time after SPM can be a confusing one if not guided properly by an experienced and knowledgeable education counselor.
It can be confusing for students to choose the right major for their undergraduate degree studies in Malaysia.
Preparations should have been made even before this time but fear not it is still not too late if you have not decided on a career path. It is important for you to research carefully the career that you intend to pursue.
Students after SPM would need to go through some sort of a Pre-University programme before entering into the degree course. Therefore, you still have about 1 to 1.5 years in your Pre-U programme to really figure out what to study for your degree.
Choosing the Best Course in Malaysia to Study after SPM
I was confused about which university to study. EduSpiral talked to me and took me to tour the campus to help me with my decision. Eddy Soo, Business at HELP University
After completing your Pre-University programme such as Foundation, A-Levels, AUSMAT, UNSW Foundation, etc. you will need to choose what to study in your degree. You do not have the time to choose which degree course. The time that you took during your Pre-U should have been used to decide what to study at degree level.
Your results in SPM would give you an idea of what you are actually good at. Furthermore, you would need to look at the entry requirements into the degree programmes as well.
If you do not meet the entry requirements, then there is no point to consider taking that particular course.
Decision-Making Process on How to Choose the Best Course to Study in Malaysia or Singapore
At EduSpiral Consultant Services, we have counseled and helped thousands of students to choose the right course and private university to study in Malaysia. Based on our experience we have come up with three simple steps that I will call the GEM method which will help you in your decision-making.
Gather Information.
Evaluate the Information.
Make a Decision.
1. Gather Information – Gather information relevant and related to your course & career of interest
A. Gather all relevant information on the courses that interest you. Make a list of your interests, likes,
EduSpiral provides free transport to students to visit our partner universities such as the top ranked Heriot-Watt University Malaysia at the new campus in Putrajaya
strengths, hobbies and talents. Also ask your family members and friends to tell you what you are good at.
Make a simple list of your interests, your hobbies and what you are actually good at. Don’t put down things that you are interested to do but write down things that you know that you are good at. For example, you are good in debates, sports, mathematics, fixing cars, and others.
Your interests should be realistic and related to your strengths and what you are good at. For example, if you are interested in becoming an engineer but your results in Mathematics and Physics are consistently low, you may want to reconsider your choice or if you want to be a musician but cannot play any instrument, it would be an unwise move to choose music as your career pathway.
B. Show your family members and friends the list and ask them whether you are actually good at the things you have listed.
Have your friends go through the list and give comments on how good you are at your interests, hobbies and talents. Your parents and trusted friends may give you a different perspective on what you are good at. This is valuable insight that will help you in your decision-making.
C. Talk to your parents, uncles, aunts, cousins and older siblings who are knowledgeable or working in that field
I met EduSpiral a few years ago after completing my Diploma at LKW. I wanted to continue my degree at a better university & EduSpiral showed the number of awards won by First City UC for interior design which convinced me. Jun Hao at his graduation showcase, Interior Design at First City University College
Your parents and older siblings may have good insights into your abilities and offer good suggestions. Ask them what talents they think you have and maybe what career options would be good for you.
Know yourself. Your SPM results is a guide of what you are good at. If you do well in Sejarah, BM and English, you can consider Marketing, Mass Comm, or Business. If you are good in Modern Maths, you can consider Business Admin, Finance or Accounting. For Add Maths & Physics, engineering, software engineering, IT, or programming.
So, choose according to what you are good at, not what you think you are good at. If you are still not sure, talk to your parents,
friends, school counselor or professionals in your field of interest to find out more.
Remember some relatives just simply share information that is not supported by facts or evidence. When asking for opinions, ask from people who are knowledgeable and experienced. Would you ask a doctor how to repair your car? If not, then do not simply listen to hearsay and gossip.
D. Talk to an experienced career guidance counsellor in Malaysia
Look for an experienced Career Guidance Counselor or Education Advisor in Malaysia to help you. They should have years of experience in helping students in making the right choices. Some of these education advisors have no experience or are just fresh graduates working at the Agents’ Offices. You must ask yourself how much experience would a 24-year old in counseling students? Is he or she knowledgeable about the course content, the requirements for professional accreditation, job demand, job salary, and other important information.
E. Talk to professionals in the field of interest in Malaysia
Talk to professionals in the fields that you are interested in to find out what they do. Ask them what they do in their jobs, what they like about it, what are its future prospects, what type of talents are required for the work, and other relevant questions.
Visit their place of work if possible to gain a ‘feel’ for their type of work. Talking to the professionals will help you gain a wider perspective and insight into the type of work. They will be able share with you inside information on the work.
F. Attend education fairs in Malaysia
I met EduSpiral at the Education Fair and he helped me to filter all the information from the universities and choose the best university that fit me.” Vincent Hoy, Scholarship student at Asia Pacific University
Go for education fairs and talk to the lecturers and counselors but do not register to quickly. Listen to their advise and take the information and then talk to your parents. Remember that the colleges and universities want your money for their “business” so they will want you to register quickly.
Take time to think carefully and do not be taken in by the sales gimmicks of getting a car or iPad or discount if you register on the spot.
Talk to the various counsellors at the booths to find out more information about the individual careers. Ask about tuition costs,
short description of the career, job prospects, facilities offered in the college, and others.
Check with them to see if the course is accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), if you can apply for the PTPTN loan and how much you can apply for, how long is the course, etc.
Students should also visit the university’s campus to get a feel of what the student environment is like,
After counseling the student online, EduSpiral met the student & family at KDU University College Penang to tour & finally register for the engineering course
look at the facilities and talk to the lecturers. EduSpiral Consultant Services provides a free campus visit to our partner universities.
G. Use the Internet
Google the Internet to find out in detail about your course of interest. Use these resources available to you to find out more information about the careers that you are interested in.
H. Course Content of the Degree Programmes
Even though the title of the degree programme is the same at various universities, the course content or subjects offered are different. You should look at the subjects from the universities and compare. Make sure that they are solid enough to prepare you for a successful career in Malaysia or Singapore.
2. Evaluate the information.
I talked to EduSpiral on Facebook to find out which is the best place to study A-Levels to help me achieve my goals. I am glad I did. Gan Wei Cheng, 3A* in A-Levels at KDU College Penang and now JPA Scholarship at U. of Sydney for Pharmacy
After you have gathered all the necessary information then you need to weigh your options.
Go through all the information and choose the careers that you would like to take up and take out those that you don’t like.
Make a pros and cons list for each career that you like. From the information evaluate the points carefully on its workability, your financial viability, future prospects, your interests and results.
You can make a ranking of the top choices down to the least favourable choices.
The entry requirements for the courses and the budget for your studies will also assist in making your decision.
Should you be interested in medicine but is not from the Science stream or have at least 5Bs in the SPM, then it is not possible to study medicine.
Or if you want to study medicine but do not have at least RM400,000 for the fees, then it is no point to choose this course unless you score very high and is able to get a scholarship to study in private or you take the STPM to enter into Public University.
3. Make the decision
I went for the EduSpiral Education Fair and gained a lot of information. After the fair, EduSpiral even arranged to take me around for a campus tour, assisted me with application and accommodation as well. Nixonn Cheong, Engineering at UCSI University
After evaluating all the information that you have, now you are ready to make a decision. Decide on maybe four career choices. For example, you may want to put your first career choice as Medicine, second in Pharmacy, third in Food Science and fourth in Nutrition. When one does not work out because of grades, finances or interest then you have a back up choice.
Remember two things: It is okay to change career options during your time of study, however, you need to make informed and educated choices. Secondly, the career that you choose should meet your needs and fit your beliefs and character. You must be happy with the choice and one where it would fit your desired financial status.
List your strengths, what you are good at, your favourite subjects, the subjects that you do well in, etc.
List your weaknesses, what you are not good at, what you don’t like, the subjects that you suck at, etc.
List down your hobbies, interests, likes and dislikes, your personality, etc.
Discuss the list with your parents, teachers, counselors, or friends
Search the Internet for descriptions of careers and courses
Does the course you have chose interest you, how much is the starting salary? What does the work involve?

Many private higher educational institutions in Malaysia, have developed their own internal university foundation programmes.
These courses are accredited by the Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA) and recognised by the respective foreign partner universities.
Unlike the external qualifications which focus on more general Science and Art-based subjects, the internal qualifications provide specialisation in precise areas of study such as the fields of business, computer & IT, and engineering, and hence, cater to the specific needs of different students.

presentations, tests, and others as assigned throughout each semester. The final examination is conducted at the end of each semester. The assessments are subject to quality assurance procedures to maintain high standards and ensuring fair assessment.
Unlike the external pre-university programmes in Malaysia which focus on more general Science and Art-based subjects, the Foundation programmes for private universities provide specialisation in specific areas of study such as business, computer & IT, or engineering, and hence, cater to the specific needs of different students.
If you are interested in Design, then you can just focus on taking the Foundation in Design course which would suit your needs rather than taking a Foundation in Arts course where you may not have the interest in the subjects.
However, there are also general Foundation programmes such as Foundation in Arts and Foundation in Science offered by the private universities. Foundation in Science programmes can lead to degree courses in engineering, computing, health sciences, applied sciences, medicine, pharmacy, etc. Students completing the Foundation in Arts can go for degree programmes in accounting, business, design, computing, mass communication, and other arts-related degree courses.
Foundation in Science graduates may choose to continue in the science-related degree programmes or change to arts-related degree programmes. Therefore, their choices are wider.
The Foundation programmes at HELP University and UCSI University are recognised by some top universities in Australia, UK and New Zealand for entry into their degree programmes. Asia Pacific University is the only private university in Malaysia where all students will study the same subjects for the first semester and then when they figure out which course suits them, they choose the stream for their second and final semester.

Foundation programmes at Curtin Sarawak, a critical stepping stone to tertiary study
Curtin University Sarawak is a top ranking university in Malaysia with a 300-acre campus
It is highly recommended that students completing their secondary school studies up to SPM level and thinking of enrolling at a top foreign university campus like Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) enter either of its foundation programmes.
It could prove a critical stepping stone to tertiary study not only at the Curtin Sarawak campus, which is Curtin University’s largest international campus, but also Curtin’s main campus in Perth or any of Curtin University’s other campuses in the region.
According to Professor Dr. Ir. Yudi Samyudia, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor of Curtin Sarawak, the foundation programmes are intensive, focused programmes that enable students to adapt easily to the Curtin academic system. They also guarantee them entry to Curtin’s undergraduate programmes upon successful completion.
“The programmes challenge the students to become active learners who can acquire, interpret, communicate and apply

knowledge within and across disciplines to cultivate the integrative thinking required in a complex and rapidly changing world,” said Professor Samyudia.
Low student-lecturer ratios in classrooms mean the students enjoy a friendly study environment with individual attention and pastoral care. All the academic staff in the foundation programmes are highly qualified and dedicated to ensuring their students get the most out of their programmes.
In addition, modern, diversified teaching methods are applied, which include workshops, introduction to research methods, modern laboratory projects, group projects, oral and multimedia presentations.
Students enjoy advanced technological support such as a modern library, well-equipped laboratories, ample supplies of learning materials, Internet access, and access to online resources at Curtin’s main campus in Perth, Western Australia.
The courses are aimed at developing academic diligence, critical analysis, and a raft of generic skills in students. They provide a solid foundation for the students to adapt to university education more confidently, both in terms of level and style of education. Both courses are recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

Ask a Knowledgeable & Experienced Education Consultant to Help you Make the Right Choice
Lonnie Sik, Founder of EduSpiral, has more than 15 years of experience counseling thousands of students on how to choose the right course & university
in finding out who you are and what you are good at. An experienced Education Advisor would be invaluable in assisting you to choose the right course. Students need to talk to the right education counselors so that you get the right information to help you in making this life-changing decision.
Ask the right Education Counselors. Would you ask a Doctor on how to repair your car? Or would you ask a mechanic for medical advise? Although this sounds ridiculous, but many students do listen to advise from young and inexperienced counselors from universities, colleges or agents’ offices. Talking to an experienced education advisor would help you to navigate through this confusing time of choosing the best course that fits you.
Experienced education counselors are able to analyse your interests, personality and exam results
EduSpiral took these students separately to tour the campus and provided course counseling to help them make the right choice. Kian Yong (Mechanical Engineering), Yammie (Business), & Kenneth Pang (Architecture) at UCSI University’s Orientation
to help you make a list of possible courses for consideration.

Looking at your results in SPM, UEC or O-Levels could help you to decide which course you would be good at.
Many students after SPM make the mistake of just listening to advise without verifying whether the

information given is true or not.

Although Asia Pacific University is famous for IT but I found out that they have a solid accounting programme and I can get a UK degree. I got a scholarship as well from APU.” Julian Hum, from SMK St. Michael Institution, Ipoh studying Business at Asia Pacific University.
An undergraduate degree course in Malaysia lasts three to five years – that’s a long time to spend studying something which you don’t enjoy, especially at a more intense level! First of all ask yourself what you have enjoyed studying at secondary school in Malaysia.
Your SPM or O-Level results will show what you are actually good at.
If your actual results do not meet the entry requirements for your particular course of interest, then you may need to consider other options or to resit the SPM or O-Level exam to get the necessary results.
What do I want to do for my career?
You may have a clear idea of what you want to do for a career which makes choosing a course to study

Best Education Pathway After SPM
I was confused about what to study and talking to EduSpiral helped me a lot. Coming from Sarawak made it difficult for me to know which university was best in Malaysia & EduSpiral provided good insights. Eric Lu, Business at KDU University College
There are basically 2 pathways after SPM or O-Levels. You can either go for a Diploma course or Pre-University Course in Malaysia or Singapore. “Pre” means before, therefore, “Pre-University” means the course that you take before entering into a university bachelors degree programme. The common courses under Pre-University are STPM, A-Levels, Foundation, AUSMAT, etc.
Students after SPM or O-Levels who are not sure what to study at degree level can go for the Pre-University course in Malaysia like A-Levels, AUSMAT or Foundation and then proceed on to the degree in Malaysia or Singapore.
Choosing the right Pre-University course that fits you would mean that you have to ask yourself which methods of assessment best suit you? Exams, coursework, practicals, group projects and presentations could all be in the mix in differing quantities. Every Pre-University course will include a % breakdown of assessment. You need to understand yourself and capabilities in order to decide which Pre-University course would best suit you.
Students who are sure of what they want to study after SPM or O-Levels can enter the Diploma course

How to Choose the Right Course to Study after SPM?
Choosing the Best Course to Study after SPM or O-Levels
After I finished my SPM, I felt confused about my further study. Because of Eduspiral, I am able to pursue my studies at Asia Pacific University. Choosing the right course to study in Malaysia after high school is one of the most important decisions you can make in your life. This can be a confusing and difficult time if you are unprepared.
With the wide variety of courses available to a student, the time after UEC, SPM or STPM can be a confusing one if not guided properly by an experienced and knowledgeable education counselor.
It can be confusing for students to choose the right major for their undergraduate degree studies in Malaysia.
Preparations should have been made even before this time but fear not it is still not too late if you have not decided on a career path. It is important for you to research carefully the career that you intend to pursue.
Students after SPM or O-Levels would need to go through some sort of a Pre-University programme before entering into the degree course. Therefore, you still have about 1 to 1.5 years in your Pre-U programme to really figure out what to study for your degree.

This is undertaken in fully-equipped laboratories for Analogue and Digital electronics, Communications Engineering, Electrical Power, Controls and Automation, as well as Materials and Testing laboratories and the Mechanical workshop.
As well as this, in order to enable students to learn and understand the latest high-tech engineering techniques, software such as Matlab, Multisim (Simulation) and Autodesk Inventor (Engineering Design) have been installed in the Engineering software and Microprocessor laboratory. Students can make use of all these facilities to do their course work and projects.

The EduSpiral Career Assessment form is a simple form designed by us that gathers information from students after SPM, O-Levels, UEC, STPM or A-Levels in order to assess their aptitude helping us to determine the most suitable course and career progression. After knowing which course, we can then determine which private university in best for that course.
Points on How to Choose a Top Private University to Study at in Malaysia or Singapore
Being from Sarawak made it difficult to choose the right college. EduSpiral provided me with a lot of information to help me make the right choice. Sze Chuan, Hotel & Tourism at Reliance College
Starting your university search with the basics will help you identify the universities that will best suit you academically and personally. Each of us has unique needs and values, and what is important to you may not matter to someone else.
Being a sports enthusiast, you may want a university that has the facilities to support your lifestyle. The same goes for school size, cost, and other basic college criteria. By identifying your needs, you can narrow down which universities and focus on the things that will make your university a perfect fit.
Which course do you want to Study in Malaysia?
Knowing which course you want to study will help in determining which university. Just like signature dishes for restaurants, certain private universities are famous for particular courses. Choosing the best university for that course would ensure that you benefit from their experience.
Which Country do you want to study your Degree programme at?
I was confused about what to study and talking to EduSpiral helped me a lot. Coming from Sarawak made it difficult for me to know which university was best in Malaysia & EduSpiral provided good insights. Eric Lu, Business at KDU University College
Deciding which country that you would like to study your degree programme at would help you to determine which Pre-University course to study. Knowing which Pre-University course would then help you identify the best university in Malaysia for that course.
To study in the USA, you can go for the American Degree Transfer Program (ADTP) where you would study 2 years in Malaysia and then transfer to a university in the USA. However, note that if you take the ADTP and later decide not to go to the USA, you cannot enter into any degree programme in Malaysia. And if you take an external Pre-University course like SAM, AUSMAT, CPU or A-Levels, you would not get the maximum amount of credits to transfer to a university in the USA.
If you want to study in Australia for your degree, then you can go for the UNSW Foundation Year, AUSMAT or SAM. A-Levels is accepted worldwide but if you do not plan to go overseas, you should just go for the Foundation programme at the private university. The Foundation programme is easier and cheaper than an external Pre-University course.
Budget for your Studies
I talked to EduSpiral on Facebook to find out which is the best place to study A-Levels to help me achieve my goals. I am glad I did. Gan Wei Cheng, 3A* in A-Levels at KDU College Penang and now JPA Scholarship at U. of Sydney for Pharmacy
When buying a mobile phone, you would have a budget in mind and with that budget you can filter out which phones you can or cannot afford. It is the same with choosing a private university. You need to have a budget in mind so that you can filter out which universities that you can afford to study at.
Many students have chosen the cheapest private university to study, not taking into consideration the important skills that they could have gained from a better university. Higher education is an investment for a better future that takes sacrifice.
Diploma and degrees offered at Private Universities in Malaysia or Singapore
Not all degree programmes bearing the same title are the same at all universities. A business administration degree at university A is not the same as at university B. Students must look at the subjects offered in the diploma or degree to see if they relevant, up-to-date, and help you to achieve your career goals.
Accreditation by MQA and other relevant professional bodies in Malaysia
“I met EduSpiral at their Education Fair in Ipoh. I don’t come from a rich family but I very much wanted to go to KL to study. EduSpiral recommended First City UC to me and my parents. We found that First City UC is excellent for design and the fees are very affordable as well. Eric Lau from ACS Ipoh graduated from Diploma in Interactive Design at First City University College
All foundation, diploma and degree programmes must be accredited by MQA in Malaysia. Taking a professional certificate course with a title “diploma” would not allow you to continue on into a degree programme accredited by MQA.
If you want to become a lawyer, you must take the A-Levels and have a credit for SPM Bahasa Malaysia subject. I had one student who took a Diploma in Law at a college in Sarawak and then realise that he could not become a lawyer in the end because he doesn’t have A-Levels.
A 3+0 UK degree would follow the syllabus of the UK partner university. A UK education style is different from an Australian or American education. Therefore, you will need to determine which style best suits you.
I talked to a group of students who were advised by an Agent to take an external Pre-University programme. They did not achieve the necessary results to enter into university therefore wasted their money and time. When I asked them why they did not go for the Foundation programme at the private university since they knew that they wanted to study IT and also locally in Malaysia, they just said that they followed the advise of the agent whom they thought they could trust.
Entry requirements to study at Private Universities in Malaysia
I scored 10As in my SPM and needed scholarships to help me continue my studies. EduSpiral gave me the information online and took me around to the campuses to help me make the best choice. Lay Hoe, A-Levels at HELP University
Sometimes you may want to study a course but you may not have the results to enter the course. Arts stream students would not be able to enter into science related degree courses except for engineering. Branch campuses in Malaysia have higher entry requirements as well.
Location of the Private University
Some students have told me that they just want to study at a university nearest to their home. That may not be the best reason in choosing a university although it may be convenient for you. A private university in a city setting like Kuala Lumpur or Singapore would expose you to independent living and modern-minded students who would help shape your character.
Studying in Singapore is in a safe & modern environment with world-class education system.
Student Culture of the Private University
EduSpiral emphasised the importance of having good English for our future career. I am glad to join a globalised university which has helped me to improve my communication skills. Vincent Yeoh, Accounting & Finance at Asia Pacific University
The overall culture of your college may play as big a role in your future success as your degree. Figuring out what’s important to you will help you narrow the field when choosing a private college or university in Malaysia or Singapore, and you may discover some options that hadn’t even been on your radar!
Many students have chosen the cheapest private university to study, not taking into consideration the important skills that they could have gained from a better university. Higher education is an investment for a better future that takes sacrifice.
It is important to choose a private university in Malaysia or Singapore that has an English-speaking environment, students who are ambitious and serious about studies, and a globalised student body. Mixing around with international students will help to improve your English language skills and understanding of different cultures.
Some private universities in Malaysia are known for their focus on lifestyle or known as party universities. There is nothing wrong with choosing them if you are able to control yourself. If not, you have to consider that this could affect your future.
Make up of the student body at a top private university in Malaysia
EduSpiral explained the pathway to become an actuaries & gave facts on why Heriot-Watt is the best for actuarial science. We also toured the campus and hostel. Weng Hang, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia
A private university that has a diverse student body with many international students would help students to improve their English-language and cross-cultural communication skills. With globalisation, many top companies in the world are looking for professionals who are dynamic with strong management skills to lead a globalised work force.
Choosing Between Public Universities and Private Universities in Malaysia
STPM takes 1.5 years to complete and by the time it takes you to enter into Public University, it would have taken you 2.5 years after your SPM. The STPM is a very tough course and covers a lot of material. If you are not prepared for it, you may not do well and would have wasted the time. In addition, if you are a top student, taking a tough course, you may not score high which would affect your scholarship opportunities.
Going for the Foundation or an easier Pre-University programme may increase your chances of scoring high for the exam therefore allowing you to apply for scholarships to study for your degree.
After the STPM, you do not get to really choose your course or university as the government does that for you according to demand.
Cost, scholarships, and financial aid (tuition, hostel, food, transportation, etc.)
EduSpiral helped me to find the right college for A-Levels, & now they have helped me to choose what to study after my A-Levels. Chee Kin, Actuarial & Finance degree at UCSI University
The cost of studying at university is one thing that most parents think about during the college search process. Not all colleges and universities in Malaysia or Singapore have the same price tag and there are a variety of ways to cut your costs. Most universities offer scholarships, and students are able to apply for the PTPN Loan, EPF withdrawal, MARA Loan, etc
Campus resources
Students should visit the universities campuses to look at the labs, libraries, sports facilities, etc. While visiting, you can also get a feel of the student culture to see if it fits you.
Qualified & experienced faculty at the University in Malaysia
Students should look at the qualifications of the lecturers at the university. How many are PhD and Master degree holders. Are the lecturers mostly part time or full time? Experienced lecturers would be able to guide students to achieve academic success.
Quality/reputation/ranking of the private university in Malaysia
There is no official ranking system in Malaysia for private universities. The MQA and Ministry of Higher
EduSpiral took my father & I to visit KDU University College and talk to the Game Technology lecturer & Head. I was able to make a good decision in choosing the right university. Choon Meng, Game Technology at KDU University College
Education in Malaysia has a rating system for universities in Malaysia. It is the SETARA rating system.
Looking at the number of awards that the university and its students have won in competitions related to the course can be a guide in helping you to make the right choice. Many students make the mistake of just listening to advertisements or friends without checking the information.
Student support services
Does the private university that you are interested in provide support services for students in times of need? Some private universities provide qualified and trained psychologists to help students with their problems and counsel them.
An active Student Affairs Department would have a lot of extra-curricular activities providing for a vibrant university life. Strong student clubs and societies would help build important skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork, problem-solving and creativity.
The Accommodation Department would assist students with options for on-campus and off-campus accommodation.

Take Time and Effort to Choose the Right Private University in Malaysia to Study at
I was confused about what to study and talking to EduSpiral helped me a lot. Coming from Sarawak made it difficult for me to know which university was best in Malaysia & EduSpiral provided good insights. Eric Lu, Business at KDU University College
Choosing a university is important as it will help to shape your mind, character and help you to develop the necessary skills for a successful career. Therefore, not all private universities are the same. You should not choose a university because it is the cheapest, easiest and nearest. It should be based on which university that best fits your needs.
Many students in Malaysia also make the common mistake in choosing a university because their friends are going there. I even had one student tell me that his choice of university depends on where his girlfriend is going! This is one of the most important decisions that may change your life forever hence it should not be taken lightly.
Part of finding the right college or university in Malaysia for you will be picking out the criteria that matters to most to you, and then seeing if any of the top private colleges or universities in Malaysia that you’re looking at fit those criteria. To help you to choose the best university that fits you, you can build a list of top universities in Malaysia that meets your criteria.
Here’s some advice for trying to find the university in Malaysia or Singapore that works for you.
1. Start with who you are and why you are going to university in Malaysia
EduSpiral emphasised the importance of having good English for our future career. I am glad to join a globalised university which has helped me to improve my communication skills. Vincent Yeoh, Accounting & Finance at Asia Pacific University
You need to examine yourself and your reasons for going to college before you start your search. Why, really, are you going? What are your abilities and strengths? What are your weaknesses? What do you want out of life — something tangible or intangible?
Are you socially self-sufficient or do you need warm, familial support? Talk with your family, friends and high-school counselors as you ask these questions. The people who know you best can help you the most with these important issues.
2. A name-brand university in Malaysia will not guarantee your success.
We didn’t know that First City University College had won many awards for Interior Design until EduSpiral showed us the awards. The “famous” college that we had planned to join hadn’t even won any awards in interior design. Zhi Yih & Chin Xien, Foundation in Design at First City University College
Think about the people in your life who are happy and successful and find out where (and if) they went to college. Ask the same about famous people. You will likely find that success in life has less to do with the choice of college than with the experiences and opportunities encountered while in college, coupled with personal qualities and traits.
Some private universities have spent millions of Ringgit throughout the years telling you that they are the best. You should objectively look at the information carefully to assess which university in Malaysia is best for you. If you do not have the necessary knowledge and skills, you won’t get far in your career.
We must be careful when choosing a private university in Malaysia as many students listen to advise from friends and relatives who are not knowledgeable offering information not supported by facts and evidence. Choosing a private university should be done carefully and objectively, not based on the number of glitzy advertisements you have heard or seen about that university.
Employers and graduate schools are looking for outstanding skills and experience, not how famous a university is in Malaysia that you come from. Remember that the employer will be interviewing you and not the university that you come from, therefore, if you do not possess the necessary knowledge and skills, you would not get hired even if you come from a top university.
3. You dont need to know what major you want for your degree yet
“EduSpiral gave me advise over phone, Facebook, Skype and even took me to visit the universities. He spent a lot of time to help me make my decision on what to study and at which university.” Ban Moon (Left), Scored 3As in the A-Levels at HELP Academy
Very few high-school students have enough information or experience to choose a major. You need the variety and depth of college coursework to determine your interest and aptitude. Most college students change their minds two or three times before they settle on a major.
After SPM or O-Levels you will take a Pre-University course first such as Foundation, A-Levels, AUSMAT, UNSW Foundation Year, etc. You have about 1 year in the Pre-U course to really figure out what to study for your degree. So, the most important thing is to choose the right Pre-University course that fits you.
4. You can afford to go to a Private University in Malaysia.
My mother whatsapped EduSpiral & he provided vital information to help me make my decision to transfer my diploma. Soon Hong, Marketing at HELP University
If you make the assumption that you cannot afford college based on the sticker price of tuition, you will miss out. It is difficult to talk about money, but if you investigate all the options and ask for help and advice, you will find affordable choices.
Not all colleges and universities in Malaysia or Singapore have the same price tag and there are a variety of ways to cut your costs. Most universities offer scholarships, and students are able to apply for the PTPN Loan, EPF withdrawal, MARA Loan, etc
Many students have chosen the cheapest private university to study, not taking into consideration the important skills that they could have gained from a better university. Higher education is an investment for a better future that takes sacrifice.
5. Campus Culture and Community Life at the Private Universities in Malaysia
EduSpiral explained the courses in detail and took us around the campus to view the Pharmacy facilities to help me make a good decision about my future career. Ka Jun, Pharmacy at UCSI University
When developing your list of top universities, consider the schools’ values such as commitment to diversity, vibrant campus life, and dedication to academic excellence. Also consider the range of student organizations, athletic and recreational activities.
Some private universities in Malaysia are known for their focus on lifestyle or known as party universities. There is nothing wrong with choosing them if you are able to control yourself. If not, you have to consider that this could affect your future.
A private university that has a diverse student body with many international students would help students to improve their English-language and cross-cultural communication skills. With globalisation, many top companies in the world are looking for professionals who are dynamic with strong management skills to lead a globalised work force.
In addition, the university’s relationship with the larger community, availability of on- and off- campus housing, quality of food and health care services, and campus security contribute to the quality of university life.
6. Quality/reputation/ranking of the Private University in Malaysia

7. The most important factor in choosing a college or university in Malaysia is fit.
EduSpiral took us to tour the campus and helped us to make a good decision after our A-Levels. Jolene & Aaron, MA Business & Finance at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia
Choosing a college because your friends are going there or because of where it ranks on a list does not take into account who you are and who you will become. College is a match to be made, not a prize to be won. Finding a good fit requires time and thoughtfulness.
The best way to really get a feel for a university is by visiting the campus, taking a tour, meeting with students & lecturers, attending a class, reading the campus newspaper, eating in the cafeteria, etc. You have to feel “at home” at the place where you will spend the next four years of your life, so visiting is important.
For more information and strategies, read our article, EduSpiral University Campus Tours to Help Students Choose the Best Universities. If some universities on your list are just too far away to make a trip, then you can add EduSpiral on Facebook and we can show you videos and photos of the campus and its facilities.
8. Decide What You Want in a Private College or University in Malaysia or Singapore
“I attended EduSpiral’s Education Fair at KInta Riverfront after my SPM exam and obtained great information there. Although Asia Pacific University is famous for IT but I found out that they have a solid accounting programme and I can get a UK degree. I got a scholarship as well from APU.” Julian Hum, Accounting at Asia Pacific University
Ask yourself what’s important to you, where you want to be and who you want to become. Then you can figure out what types of colleges will allow you to achieve your goals.
Here are some important points to consider when choosing a university in Malaysia:
Size of the university
Accreditation of the University’s courses by MQA and other relevant professional bodies in Malaysia
Location
Student culture – is it an English-speaking students environment
Makeup of the student body – are there a lot of international students at the university so that you can mix around with them to improve your English and gain invaluable global perspectives
In addition, think about what you want to accomplish in your college life. Do you want to train for a specific job or get a wide-ranging education? If you have a specific degree programme in mind, is the private college that you’re considering strong or famous in that area of study?
9. Talk to a Knowledgeable & Experienced Education Consultant to Help you to Choose the Best Private University or College in Malaysia
