At Taylor’s University, the goal is to elevate their research centre, The Center for Modern Architecture Studies in Southeast Asia (MASSA), into a renowned research centre in Southeast Asia.

They intend to address the urgent need to include modern architecture as part of the architectural heritage in Southeast Asia, thus aiding the process of planning settlements and designing buildings that are suited to the context and continuity of the cultures of Southeast Asia.

As part of their initiatives to document Malaysia’s heritage, the students visited Kampung Cina, Kuala Terengganu, to examine the site and produce detailed drawings. These drawings were subsequently used to restore a temple to its former glory, after it was partly ruined in a fire.

Other research projects undertaken by our students include:

  • Modern Architecture Kuala Lumpur Series featuring Masjid Negara, Muzium Negara, Stadium
  • Negara, Stadium Chin Woo and British Council
  • The Inventory of Sungai Buloh Leprosy Settlements, Selangor
  • Chapel of St. Francis Institution, Malacca
  • No. 6, Hereen Street, Bandar Hilir, Malacca
