Multimedia is the combination of the 3Cs, being computer, communication and content. Technologies have now enabled computers to store and transmit text, images and sound worldwide and functioning as a “multi-media” tool such as a TV, a video, a telephone, a fax machine, an information kiosk all rolled into one, which were formerly performed separately by different media.

In short, multimedia can be defined as the combination of text, graphic, sound, animation, and video.

Multimedia/ Internet prospective is looking into two key elements – being digital and interactive. Nowadays most of the household communication and electronic devices are going digital. Being digital means these devices are becoming more intelligent with built-in computer chips. Interactivity will enable us to control the ways, time and the means of information being delivered to us. It also gives us the freedom of choice to use the devices according to our needs.

Future applications in multimedia technologies and products such as kiosk, games, interactive TV, video

conferencing, Web etc. will definitely reflect the strong needs of multimedia professionals. With Internet, even more people will access to Web sites and set up homepage for business purposes. All these applications will drive the multimedia and Internet to be the fastest expanding career areas.

Information technology is penetrating into ever more areas of activity. Devices and systems are getting ever more sophisticated

and versatile. As one generation of multimedia/ computers comes to the market, the next one is in production. This implies computing professionals of all kinds have a promising future and need to keep up with the latest technology in computing.

There is an increasing trend for IT professionals to work with users in installing, programming, analyzing/ designing systems, controlling, managing, setting up project teams for computing departments, liasing with other staff and training existing staff to use the devices.

What do Multimedia Designers do in Malaysia?

Most people want to work with computers because they are fascinated by their versatility, their capacity to cut out drudgery and to achieve results which in pre-information technology days were either impossible to achieve, or which would have taken a large amount of time and labour to achieve them.

However, wanting to work with computers or Internet is by no means a reason for choosing an Information Technology career. In virtually any job, whether it is clerical, technical, professional; whether it is banking, manufacturing, retailing or medicine, computers are used extensively. In all these spheres, people who use computers need not understand any more about the working of the computing devices than car drivers need to understand about engines.

Information Technology professionals comprise a range of highly-skilled specialists who have to acquire their expertise just as any other professionals. Devices are becoming even more sophisticated, demanding new skills. There are new job areas that both IT providers and users are still experimenting with. There are many jobs and the titles are sometimes ambigious.

The following are some of the jobs in the multimedia, Internet and computing lines:

Multimedia Designers are able to find work in motion picture and video industries, advertising, and computer systems design services.

They draw by hand and use computers to create the series of pictures that form the animated images or special effects seen in movies, television programs, and computer games.

Some draw storyboards for television commercials, movies, and animated features. Storyboards present television commercials in a series of scenes similar to a comic strip and allow an advertising agency to evaluate commercials proposed by advertising companies.

Storyboards also serve as guides to placing actors and cameras on the television or motion picture set and to other production details. Many multi-media artists model objects in three dimensions by computer and work with programmers to make those images move.
