Increasing Demand for Qualified Digital Marketing Professionals in Malaysia

Liew, Digital Marketing, Asia Pacific University (APU)

There is a massive demand for digital marketing professionals in Malaysia. Because of the high demand, the pay for digital marketing roles is also high.

Companies know how beneficial the internet and digital platforms are. Digital marketing lets them reach a wider audience, scale their business further, and generate more revenue.

With the rapid rise in digitalisation, companies are now able to do so much more than just sell products on a website or platform. Digital marketers have to choose from a wide array of available technologies to target specific audiences and consumers to create a personalised experience.

From using rich media ads on websites to targeting specific social media networking sites and influencers, companies are trying to build a relationship with their customer base through Ai, market research and data analytics. Obtaining invaluable insights on their social habits from these tools, businesses are able to create content that target specifically where they congregate and influence their buying behaviour.

AirAsia developed their super app when the aviation industry was down, AEON pivoted to online delivery of shopping goods, and Zara and Ikea used AR (augmented reality) in their retail businesses. These are just some examples of how companies have rapidly turned to digitalisation in their marketing efforts.

Futhermore, companies will increase their usage of social sites like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter to build a rapport with their customers and increase their base.

What do Digital Marketing Professionals do?

Digital marketers have ample knowledge of multiple online tools and platform, and requires a unique combination of both creativity and technical knowledge. You will be writing eye-catching headlines for ad campaigns to reach the intended target audience, as well as checking the analytics of the campaign to ensure that its on the right track.

Setting up a business online, running ad campaigns, developing content strategies are a few of the tasks a digital marketing expert does to provide such results.

This is probably the first question you should ask yourself as you consider pursuing a degree in marketing. A marketing degree will open many doors for you in your career, as it is an integral and in-demand job for most companies.

The skills and techniques you’ll learn while studying marketing can help you later on, if you decide to pursue a different type of degree like business management or advertising.

When you study marketing, you’ll acquire knowledge that can help you in any business-related career, because you’ll understand the importance of consumer relations, communication, and the various stakeholders involved.

Basically every company or brand needs a marketing team. When you study marketing you don’t normally study a specific type or area of business, you will study marketing as a whole and all the different responsibilities involved in a marketing career.  Once you graduate, you can work for a bank, clothing brand, make up brand, car manufacturer, restaurant, private university or school, mobile phone company, telco, and more.

Furthermore, salaries for marketing professionals tend to be on the high side as well. These will make it appealing for students who want a career that is stable and able to sustain their future lifestyle.

Who Should Study Marketing?

EduSpiral advised me on WhatsApp & provided all the information on Taylor’s University. He also helped to arrange a campus tour. Finally, he helped me to register as well as apply for the scholarship.
Hazel Hoh, Foundation in Arts (Communication)

Marketing is an exciting and rewarding career, but you need to possess a combination of several personality traits and characteristics to make it in the marketing world.

Although successful marketing professionals come from different backgrounds there are some personality qualities they tend to have in common; you need to be creative and self-motivated, you have to be able to work well in a team environment, very detail oriented, a planner but also open to last minute changes, you need to be a leader at times and a follower when necessary, you need to know how to stay up-to-date on trends, be optimistic, able to understand your consumer, and so on.

Really, the list could go on and on but you get the basic idea. The truth is that there is no one trait or list of specific traits that a marketing professional needs to have, but a sort of combination of all of them all.

Academic Quality of the Marketing Courses at the University in Malaysia

My mum contacted EduSpiral to help advise me on which course & university to choose as I was quite confused. He took us to visit the universities & helped guide me to make the right choice.
Bryan Yap, Foundation in Business at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia

  • Subjects offered in the marketing Foundation, Diploma or Degree (Are they relevant, up-to-date, and help you to achieve your career goals)
  • Entry requirements for the Foundation, Diploma & Degree courses at the university in Malaysia (Foreign branch campuses in Malaysia have higher entry requirements)
  • What is the Class size for the course (Small class size for personal attention)
  • Faculty contact/classes taught by full-time qualified & experienced faculty
  • Quality of lecturers. What are their qualifications? How many years of experience in teaching?
  • Ask your friends who have studied there or currently studying there for their opinion on the teaching quality, environment and facilities.
  • Type of programme (local degree, 3+0 UK or Australian degree, 4+0 American degree, degree transfer programme, etc)
  • What are the Entry Requirements for the marketing Foundation, Diploma & Degree courses at the university (Foreign Branch campuses in Malaysia have higher entry requirements for their courses)
  • Does the university have a strong internship or Co-Op programme?
  • Do they have enough students to start a class?

Facilities at the University for the Course of Interest in Malaysia

Foundation in Business into Finance at Taylor's University
My dream was to study at Taylor’s University and with the Taylor’s Excellence Award that EduSpiral shared with me, I am able to achieve it.
Chun Tim, Foundation in Business into Finance at Taylor’s University

  • Location of the university. Is it in the city, suburbs or country side? Some students prefer a city life while other students prefer a quieter university environment away from the city.
  • Size of the university. Courses such as engineering would require larger campuses with technologically advanced facilities, labs and software. Design courses basically require computers & software with small classes for personal attention.
  • Transportation. Is the university accessible to you? What are the public transportation available? If you drive, is there ample parking?
  • Campus resources (labs, library or resource centre, wifi, computer access, sports facilities, etc.)
  • Facilities for your course of interest. Labs, computers, software, etc.

Cost for your Marketing Management Foundation, Diploma or Degree Studies in Malaysia

My sister found EduSpiral online. I wanted a college that wasn’t expensive with great facilities and a UK degree. EduSpiral just helped us to find the right college.
Yen Yong, Business at First City University College

  • How much money do I have to pay for the course and cost of living? Ask your parents. Note that you will need to have enough to pay the tuition fees as well as your cost of living. (Costs for university studies in Malaysia would include tuition, hostel, food, transportation, entertainment, etc.)
  • What are the Financial assistance available at the university? (Scholarships, PTPN Loan, EPF withdrawal, MARA Loan, etc)

  • How much is off-campus accommodation? (Off-campus apartments, houses, condominiums) Note that it might be cheaper to find off campus accommodation on your own with friends. Is the accommodations near eateries, banks, entertainment, public transportation, safe & secure, etc.?

Student Environment and Activities at the University

EduSpiral emphasised the importance of having good English for our future career. I am glad to join a globalised university which has helped me to improve my communication skills.
Vincent Yeoh, Accounting & Finance at Asia Pacific University

  • What is the student culture at the university? (English-speaking environment, ambitious, serious about studies, lifestyle or party university, etc) The language spoken mostly at the college by the students may also matter if you don’t know Mandarin or BM or English. If most of the students speak Mandarin at that university then it will not help you to improve your English. Having a good command of the English language helps you to get good jobs and promotions.
  • Size of the university or college in Malaysia. Some students prefer a large campus with sports facilities and other resources while other students like small colleges with family-like environment.
  • Make up of the student body (diversity, international students, gender, etc.) Universities with a good proportion of international students will help you to improve your English language skills since you would need to communicate with them in English. In addition, you will learn about their culture, behavior and discover new ideas. These skills will be useful to you when you work overseas or in a multi-national company.
  • What are the Extra-curricular activities available? (Student organisations, clubs, sports, etc.)
  • Is the university campus is a safe area? Safety within the campus and outside.
  • Public vs. Private (STPM is tougher and choice of course & university is determined by the government)

The rapid evolution of digital marketing has created a “digital disconnect” in which the jobs market in technology, and more specifically digital marketing technology, is hungry for skilled workers in Malaysia.

According to recruiting experts Hays in Malaysia, the evolution of digital marketing is set to continue over the next decade and this will have a huge impact on the skills employers need.

“As the business landscape shifts, marketers must evolve with the times in order to fully connect with their customers and drive business growth,” says Chris Mead, Regional Director of Hays in Malaysia & Singapore.

“As marketing becomes more technology-based, harnessing and mastering ‘big data’ will be key to achieving competitive advantage. If companies are to remain market front-runners, they need to integrate their digital and social marketing channels into one customer journey.

“To do this, they require candidates with integrated offline and online channel experience,” said Chris.

Today, marketing is all about the numbers and understanding how to segment data, utilise big data, back-end technology and databases. In addition, your social media programmes and campaigns, and how you think about them, should be put in the context of your overall business and marketing objectives.

Digital marketing managers need to be able to determine if a visitor to their company’s website, iPhone app or Facebook page is a return visitor, a loyalty member, and what offers they may respond to. In the current jobs market small businesses and agencies are fighting for personnel who can do this, as well as manage accounts, run great campaigns and build content and social media marketing strategies that make an impact. But there is a shortage of the right talent.

Top Criteria to Consider When Choosing the Best Private University in Malaysia to Study Marketing Management

Here’s a list of common criteria in choosing a top private university in Malaysia to study marketing:

Recognition & Reputation of the Courses in Malaysia

EduSpiral counselled me online and met me at KDU Penang University College to take me around the campus. It helped me a lot in making the right decision.
Archie Wong, Business degree programme at KDU Penang University College

  • Is the marketing Foundation, Diploma or Degree course popular at that university?
  • What is the reputation or ranking of the private university in Malaysia? Global ranking by QS World University Rankings or locally by MQA in the SETARA 2013
  • Are the marketing Foundation, Diploma or Degree courses recognised and approved by the Ministry of Education Malaysia?
  • Are the marketing Foundation, Diploma or Degree courses accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Audit (MQA)?
  • Are the marketing Diploma or Degree courses accredited and recognised by relevant professional bodies in Malaysia?
  • Awards won by the university, staff or students for the particular course of interest. The number of awards won would be a guide on how good the university is for the course.

  •  How many students do they have studying that course at that university?
  •  What is the duration of the course? When are the intake dates?

Facilities at the University for the Course of Interest in Malaysia

Our mum asked us to talk to EduSpiral as we did not know what to study. EduSpiral had helped our older sister before. He met us at Taylor’s, talked to us and then gave us a tour.
Gan twins, Foundation in Arts at Taylor’s University

  • Is the PTPTN loan available for the course at the university?
  • How much are the tuition fees? Does it include the exam and other fees?
  • How much is on-campus accommodation?

Common Factors in Choosing the Best Private University in Malaysia for Marketing

I was confused about what to study and talking to EduSpiral helped me a lot. Coming from Sarawak made it difficult for me to know which university was best in Malaysia & EduSpiral provided good insights.
Eric Lu, Business at KDU University College

Here’s a list of common criteria in choosing a top private university in Malaysia for the Marketing course:

  • What type of university do I like? (Large, medium, small, city, suburbs, or outer city) Some people like small universities where you get a community feel while others like large university campuses where they get to meet lots of people.
  • The size of the university also matters to some people as some prefer a small and friendly university environment where you know everyone’s names. Some may prefer a medium sized university where there are more students to interact with and more facilities to use like a bigger library, student centre, computer labs etc.
  • In large universities you might feel lost but there will be more facilities like a football field, gym, swimming pool, basketball courts, etc. You just need to understand your personality and then choose the type of university that fits you.
  • If you are a sports person, you might want to find one with a football field, basketball courts, gym or

My sister found EduSpiral online. I wanted a college that wasn’t expensive with great facilities and a UK degree. EduSpiral just helped us to find the right college.
Yen Yong, Business at First City University College

    swimming pool.

  • Safety at the university campus and community.
  • Know yourself, if you like city life, don’t choose a university far away from the city even though the facilities are great. However, if you have a discipline problem in having too much fun, studying away from the city may be a good choice
